Dan Patino played soccer at Molloy from 2007-2011.
The Valley Stream, N.Y. native is taking what he learned with the Lions and using it as a doctor in the Emergency Department at the University of Connecticut – Hartford Hospital.
"Molloy has a strong sense of community," he said. "Due to its small size, students receive a personalized education and have more opportunities to network. The mentorship and career guidance I received during my time there was instrumental for starting a career in medicine."
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Patino has seen a change in the profession.
"The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) has become the norm in the emergency department," he commented. "My ensemble includes a sterile gown, pair of gloves, bouffant, N95 mask, surgical mask, and face shield. Unfortunately, supply shortage has limited our ability to interact with patients and put restrictions on family visits. As a result, many people are experiencing this disease alone and without the support of their loved ones."
The virus has also changed the types of emergencies that are coming into the unit.
"We have also seen a decline in the number of non-COVID19 related emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, and appendicitis," he said. "We know these conditions are still occurring, but people are hesitant to come to the emergency department out of fear of contracting the virus. Delay in treatment puts these patients at higher risk for developing serious illness, longer lengths of stay in the hospital, and even death. If anyone is concerned about a possible medical emergency, it is important that they seek medical attention right away."
Patino worked with his teammates as a member of the Molloy men's soccer team. Now, he is working with his medical team to fight COVID-19.
"My favorite part of my job are my colleagues," he concluded. "I work with a talented group of nurses, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and custodial staff that keep our department afloat. I would not be able to do the things I do on a daily basis without their hard work and dedication."
