No. 6 Men’s Soccer Falls To No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas In ECC First Round

Sparkill N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team saw its season come to a close Wednesday afternoon, falling to the third-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans, 3-1, at Spartan Field. The Lions end the campaign, 3-7-7, while the Spartans move on to the semifinal with a 7-7-2 record.
 
How it Happened
  • The first shot of the contest found the back of the net for the Spartans in the eighth minute after Kevon Evans' header put the home team ahead, 1-0.
  • 2:31 seconds later, St. Thomas Aquinas extended its lead, 2-0, following a goal off a corner kick.
  • Molloy tallied its first shot in the 20th minute after graduate student Danu Kinsella Bishop sent a shot high.
  • The Lions began to find its offense when sophomore Charlie Morgan blasted a shot that would be saved by Spartans goalkeeper Dante Muntane.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas put pressure on sophomore goalkeeper Callum Hunt, totaling three shots in a 2:30 span from the 38th minute to the 41st, but Hunt was able to deny all three chances to keep the contest a two-goal game going into halftime.
  • Kinsella Bishop looked to cut the lead in half five minutes into the second half, but his attempt was saved.
  • In the 57th minute, senior Jarvis Cleal was able to connect with a header that would end up being saved.
  • The home team extended its lead, 3-0, in the 63rd minute after Jorge De La Vibora finished a crossing pass.
  • 39 seconds later, Molloy cracked the scoreboard after junior Wilmer Flores fired a shot from 30 yards away into the back of the net to cut the lead to two, 3-1.
  • The 69th minute saw freshman Jack Veletanga create a scoring chance that would be denied by Muntane.
  • Seven minutes later, graduate student Jack Hynes put himself in a spot to score, but once again Muntane would make a save.
  • The cardinal and white would be held without a shot in the final 14:18 of the contest, as the Spartans would clinch the victory, 3-1.

  • Flores netted his first career goal.
  • In goal, Hunt made a season-high seven saves.
