ECC Men’s Soccer First Round Preview: #3 St. Thomas Aquinas vs. #6 Molloy

Sparkill, N.Y. – The sixth-seeded Molloy men's soccer team travels to Sparkill, New York to take on the third-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans in the First Round of the East Coast Conference Tournament Wednesday, November 5 at 12:00 p.m.
 
About the Lions:
  • Molloy finished the regular season 2-1-5 in ECC play (3-6-7 overall).
  • The cardinal and white garnered four All-Conference selections, led by graduate student Danu Kinsella Bishop who was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the First Team. Joining Kinsella Bishop is senior Matt Star and sophomore Brennan Murphy on the Second Team and sophomore Callum Hunt rounded out the squad with a Third Team selection.
  • Kinsella Bishop enters the tournament one of the nation's most prolific goal scorers, leading the ECC with 13 goals and 27 points through 12 games this season. The graduate student ranks third in the country in goals scored and eighth in points. The Dublin, Ireland native thrived in conference play, finding the back of the net 11 times while collecting three multi-goal performances while collecting a 54.3 shots on goal percentage.
  • Junior Aidan Kolbe ranks second on the team with six points on the back of two goals and two assists. Kolbe has made the most of his opportunities, totaling 40 shots on the campaign, putting 22 shots on goal to total a 55 percent shots on goal percentage.
  • Junior Wilmer Flores and sophomore Charlie Morgan sit tied for the team lead with four assists. Flores has capitalized on generating offense down the wing while Morgan has been able to find his counter parts three times in the final four games of the campaign.
  • Murphy has become a catalyst down the stretch, scoring a pair of goals in the last four games while becoming one of the best defensive midfielders in the conference. The sophomore has thrived in limiting the opponent in transition and stopping counter attacks.
  • In goal, Hunt Has collected four shutouts and a 1.27 goals against average to rank third and fourth in the league, respectively. The Norwich, England has collected 54 saves on the back of a 74 percent save percentage to help lead the Lions to secure the sixth-seed in the tournament.
Against St. Thomas Aquinas:
  • The two squads met a month ago in Rockville Centre on October 4. The contest saw the Spartans come away with a 4-2 victory.
  • In the contest, Kinsella Bishop notched a pair of goals and Kolbe and Star picked up an assist each.
Playoff History:
  • Molloy returns to postseason play for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
  • The cardinal and white made a run to the title game last season, falling to UDC in overtime, 2-1.
  • The Lions have appeared in the ECC Championship game in three of the last four years, collecting one ECC crown in 2021 and two runner-up nods (2022,2024).
  • Molloy and St. Thomas Aquinas last met in the ECC Tournament in the 2021 championship game, with the Lions defeating the Spartans in penalty kicks to claim the crown.
Scouting the Spartans:
  • St. Thomas Aquinas concluded the season 5-3 in East Coast Conference play and 6-7-2 overall.
  • The Spartans sport four All-Conference selections, paced by Mike Leue and Joaquim Cardoso on the First and rounded out by Kevon Evans (Second Team) and Dante Muntane (Third Team).
  • Evans paces the squad with 22 points on the back of eight goals and six assists. In goal, Muntane has tallied 61 saves, 74 percent save percentage, and a 1.77 goals against average.
  • In the contest against Molloy this season, Guilherme Alegria notched a pair of goals and dished out an assist to collect five points on the day.
  • Molloy is 10-9-5 all-time against St. Thomas Aquinas.
