New London, N.H. - The women's rugby team opened the 2018 season against Colby-Sawyer College at Mercer Field. Due to the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) bylaws, the game was officially recorded as a 28-0 forfeit due to Molloy having less than the required 15 players. Despite the contest being officially decided, the teams competed in a 12 v. 12 exhibition contest, which the Lions won 34-29.
The Chargers opened the exhibition match with two tries and one conversion to take a 12-0 lead. The maroon and white got on the board at the 12:10 mark of the second quarter on a try from senior Siobhan Coady. Sophomore Olivia Sturiano added a conversion to set the score at 12-7. Colby-Sawyer added two additional tries and another conversion. The Chargers led 24-12 at the half.
The Lions opened the scoring in the second half with a try from graduate student Caroline Nickels followed by another conversion from Sturiano to cut the deficit to 24-19. A Chargers' try increased the lead to 10, 29-19 in the fourth quarter.
The final 11 minutes of play, however, belonged to the maroon and white. Freshman Kaitlyn DeMaio scored her first collegiate try to bring the Lions within five, 29-24, before Sturiano tied the contest with just over six minutes left to play. A try by Coady in the final 66 seconds sealed the exhibition win in favor of Molloy.
The Lions return Cedar Creek Park on Sept. 8 to open the home portion of its schedule against LIU Post at 12:00 p.m.
