BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 6, 2017) – The Molloy baseball team split a doubleheader with the LIU Post Pioneers Saturday afternoon at the LIU Post Baseball Field. The Lions won game one, 8-6, and lost game two, 8-5. The maroon and white moved to 19-26 overall and 11-13 in East Coast Conference play with the results.
Game One: Molloy 8, LIU Post 6
The Lions overcame a five-run deficit to defeat the Pioneers, 8-6, in game one.
LIU Post (26-18,16-8 ECC) scored five runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 advantage.
Molloy started to chip away in the fourth inning. Senior
Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) hit a solo home run to make it 5-1.
The Pioneers added another run in the fifth to increase their lead to 6-1.
In the sixth, junior
Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) singled to score senior
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.). Later in the frame, Leerdam scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 6-3.
The Lions went ahead, 8-6, in the eighth inning. Junior
Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a solo homer to right field to cut the lead to 6-4. Freshman
Jake Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) grounded out to third to score senior
Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) to make it a one-run contest, 6-5. With the bases loaded and two outs, Murphy grounded the ball to second and two runs scored on an error by the second baseman to put the away team ahead, 7-6. The maroon and white capped the five-run frame when senior
Anthony Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch.
Junior
Kevin Hiss (Merrick, N.Y.) pitched four innings of scoreless ball, gave up one hit, and struck out one batter to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Game Two: Molloy 5, LIU Post 8
LIU Post scored three runs in the 10
th inning on its way to an 8-5 win in game two.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the second and the fourth to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Molloy came back with five runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Senior
Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.) hit a two-run single up the middle to score senior
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Leerdam to cut the lead to 4-2. Later in the inning, Galanoudis hit a three-run homer to right field to put the maroon and white ahead.
The home team tied the game in the sixth, before winning it in the 10
th.
The Lions and the Pioneers conclude the series and regular season Sunday (May 7). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
