Baseball Defeated by LIU Post in Regular Season Finale

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 7, 2017) – The Molloy baseball team dropped its regular season finale to the LIU Post Pioneers, 5-0, Sunday at Mitchel Field. The Lions moved to 19-27 overall and 11-14 in East Coast Conference play with the loss.

Seniors Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) and Anthony Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) recorded a team-high two hits apiece.

The Lions threatened in both the first and second innings. In the first, junior Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, and Rahn doubled to left field. With runners on second and third, Molloy failed to bring the run in. The maroon and white had runners on second and third again in the second, and couldn't bring home a run.

LIU Post (27-18, 17-8 ECC) opened the scoring in the fourth inning. Freshman Zach Fritz (East Meadow, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to center field to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, sophomore Dave Brehm (Bohemia, N.Y.) grounded out and brought home a run to increase the lead to 2-0.

Molloy had a chance to tie the game in the sixth. Freshman Sean Hogan (East Meadow, N.Y.) singled up the middle to start the inning. With two outs, senior Austin Nieves (Glendale, N.Y.) singled to right field, and junior Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.) walked to load the bases. But LIU Post worked out of the jam.

The Pioneers added three runs in the seventh on their way to a 5-0 victory.

Senior Dominic Danetti (Wantagh, N.Y.) pitched six innings, gave up two runs on four hits, and struck out five batters in the loss.

The Lions will compete in the ECC baseball tournament, which begins Thursday (May 11) at Mitchel Field. Molloy's opponent and game time will be determined later in the week. Visit Molloylions.com for the latest news on the baseball team.
