2/23/2026 2:37:00 PM

The #20 men's lacrosse team swept the East Coast Conference Weekly Awards, taking home the Offensive Player (Zach Kroog), Defensive Player (Shawn McCabe), Goalie (John Basile), and Rookie (Jaden Simick) of the Week. Freshman Ava Zicchinelli of the softball team was also selected as the league's Rookie and Pitcher of the Week. In total, Molloy also had seven members of its teams named to the Weekly Honor Roll for their respective sports.

Kroog led the way offensively for the #20 Lions in a gritty overtime victory over #8 Pace. The graduate student netted three goals in the first half of the contest before firing the game-winning goal in overtime to seal the victory. McCabe helped to keep the offense of #8 Pace in check all game long for #20 Molloy, putting up a career-best six caused turnovers to go with three ground balls as well as multiple blocked shots to preserve what would eventually be the overtime victory. Basile made a career-high 16 saves in #20 Molloy's overtime win over #8 Pace. The senior made a crucial save to keep the tie game going in the final 75 seconds of regulation before stopping a shot from a long pole in overtime that helped the Lions to victory. In his collegiate debt, Simick netted two critical goals in #20 Molloy's 13-12 overtime victory over #8 Pace. The freshman tied the game at 11 with just under eight minutes to play before converting on an EMO with just under six minutes to play to put the Lions in front.

Zicchinelli posted a team-best 3.73 ERA across 15.0 innings in her first two collegiate starts, allowing just 16 hits. The freshman recorded two complete games, striking out nine and earning her first career win in the circle. In her first complete game, she battled into extra innings, striking out two more batters and holding her opponent hit-less across the final two frames.

Also from softball, senior Emily McGurk was selected to the Weekly Honor Roll. McGurk provided a spark in the offense from the two-spot in the lineup to start the season, leading the team with a .600 batting average. Through the first four games, she went 6-for-10 at the plate with a double, a home run, four RBI, three walks, and six runs scored. She also went a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts. The senior delivered in key moments, going 2-for-2 with 2 RBI in the win over Davis & Elkins and went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader against Wingate, highlighted by a home run and a double.

From the men's basketball team, juniors Jared Weakly and Bryce Merchant were selected to the Weekly Honor Roll. Weakly continued to anchor the Molloy defense, leading the squad with 19 rebounds and five blocks. The junior collected 16 points and nine rebounds against St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday before putting up an 11 point, 11 rebound double-double at Mercy on Sunday to go with four blocks. On the week, the forward averaged 135 points, 9.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.5 blocks per game. Merchant became the 23rd player in program history to eclipse the 1000 career point mark in Sunday's victory over Mercy. The junior totaled 24 points on a 69 percent shooting day from the floor. On the week, he averaged 16.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while shooting at 50 percent.

On the women's side, senior Rosa Rizzitelli and freshman Sharmeela Ugbogbo were both named to the Weekly Honor Roll. Rizzitelli was all over the court this week for Molloy, averaging 9.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game. The senior pulled down eight defensive boards and contributed nine assists in the Lions' win over St. Thomas Aquinas before netting 14 points to go with nine rebounds, seven assists, and two steals at Mercy. Ugbogbo was a weapon under the glass in a 1-1 week for the Lions. The freshman started the week with a double-double in a win over St. Thomas Aquinas, pulling down 12 rebounds to go with 11 points while adding three blocks, two assists, and a steal. She then added another 14 boards at Mercy to go with seven points, a block, and a steal. On the week, Ugbogbo averaged 13.0 rebounds and 9.0 points per game to just miss averaging a double-double.

Rounding out the week's selections were seniors James Sill and Sean Welsh of the baseball team. Sill picked up his first win of the season on Saturday against Bridgeport. The junior tossed six innings, allowing just two unearned runs, while striking out eight in Molloy's 10-2 triumph. Welsh continued his hot start to the campaign in Myrtle Beach this weekend. The senior hit his third home run of the season Friday as part of a three-hit day while driving in two and scoring twice. Welsh ended the week driving in a pair of runs against Franklin Pierce. On the week Welsh hit .500 (5-of-10), drove in four, stole two bases, and blasted one home run while getting on base at a .583 clip.
