Boca Raton, Fla. – Returning to the diamond for the first time in 13 days, the Molloy baseball team defeated the Post University Eagles, 11-1, in seven innings Friday afternoon at Lynn University. Following the triumph, the Lions improve to 4-3 on the season while the Eagles move to 5-9.
How it Happened
- After a scoreless first inning, the Lions cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the second after a solo home run from sophomore Steve Mulqueen.
- The Eagles got the run back in the top of the third, tying the contest at one following a sacrifice fly.
- In the bottom of the third, junior Mike Sweeney connected for a two-run home run as part of a three-run inning to push Molloy back in front, 4-1.
- Molloy added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Jack Coogan ripped a single through the left side to open the lead to four, 5-1.
- The cardinal and white added three runs with two outs on the board to break the game open, 8-1, in the sixth. Junior Sean Welsh singled to score Sweeney and Coogan plated a pair with a double into right-center field.
- Molloy capped the contest with three runs in the seventh. After a run scored following a wild pitch, junior Brian Sanchez doubled into the right center gap to plate a pair of runs to finish off the victory, 11-1.
- The contest was scheduled for nine innings, but due to an agreed upon run rule after seven innings during pregame, the game would end following the seventh.
Top Performances
- Coogan led the offense with three hits and three RBI.
- Sweeney connected for his first home run of the season, scored three times and collected two hits.
- Mulqueen blasted his second home run of the campaign.
- Sanchez knocked in two runs.
- On the mound, junior James Sill improved to 2-1 on the year, tossing six innings allowing one run on five hits and striking out eight.
