Boca Raton, Fla. – The Molloy baseball team earned a 7-3 victory over the Lynn University Fighting Knights Saturday afternoon. The Lions improve to 5-3 on the campaign, while the Fighting Knights move to 8-10.
How it Happened
- Molloy took advantage of a pair of Lynn errors in the top of the first to score two runs. A run crossed the plate following a throwing error and senior Sean Welsh plated a run with an RBI ground out.
- The Lions extended their lead, 3-0, in the top of the third after junior Jack Vallario grounded out to score junior Mike Sweeney.
- After graduate student JC Kiss retired the Fighting Knights in order in the first three innings, they were able to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth following a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to two, 3-1.
- After a scoreless fifth inning, junior Steve Mulqueen connected for a solo home run in the top of the sixth that hit off the scoreboard to reclaim the Lions three-run lead, 4-1.
- The cardinal and white capitalized on another Lynn error to add to its lead in the seventh. After freshman John Franco reached third following a throwing error, junior Joe Burriesci brought him home with a single to right field to increase the lead, 5-1.
- Later in the frame, Welsh poked a single through the right side to cap the inning and give the Lions a 6-1 lead.
- In the bottom of the seventh, the home team shrunk the lead to four, 6-2, with a run crossing the plate following a RBI single.
- Lynn continued to threaten in the seventh, loading the bases with one out on the board. Sophomore Jayden Patel was called out of the bullpen and induced an inning ending double play to escape the jam.
- Molloy got the run back in the eighth, after Franco ripped a single into left field to plate senior Sean Serrano to set the lead back to five, 7-2.
- The Fighting Knights would continue to battle in the bottom of the eighth, plating a run to cut the lead down to four, 7-3.
- Lynn loaded the bases later in the inning to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs. Once again, Patel would scurry out of the jam ending the inning with a ground out.
- The home team would get the lead off man on to begin the ninth, but a pair of fielders choices and a strikeout to end the contest solidified the victory, 7-3.
