ECC Women’s Soccer Semifinal Preview: #2 Molloy vs. #3 Roberts Wesleyan

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The second-seeded Molloy women's soccer team hosts the third-seeded Roberts Wesleyan University Redhawks in the East Coast Conference Semifinal Sunday, November 9 at 12:00 p.m.
 
About the Lions:
  • Molloy finished the regular season 4-0-3 in ECC play (11-2-4 overall).
  • The Lions have not been defeated since September 6, ending the campaign 11-0-4 in their last 15 contests.
  • The cardinal and white surrendered just four goals against ECC opponents and 12 overall on the campaign, leading the conference in both categories.
  • In goal, ECC Goalkeeper of the Year and All-ECC First Team selection Elyse Muñoz continues to be a staple. The junior became the first goalkeeper in program history to collect two Goalkeeper of the Year honors, making starts in all 17 contests. The East Setauket, N.Y. native enters postseason play leading the league with a 0.71 goals against average and tied for first with eight shutouts. Conference play saw the net minder collect an 86 percent save percentage, a 0.57 goals against average, and four shut outs to help guide the squad to the second-seed.
  • Junior Isabella Muro and sophomore Jana Strait make up the duo in the midfield that picked up All-ECC honors. The pairing come into the semifinal with 11 points apiece, each contributing differently. Strait ranked tied for second on the squad with five goals while Muro leads the squad with seven assists.
  • Playing right in front of Muñoz at centerback, sophomore Meghan Wetzel has been stellar anchoring the back line of defense in her first All-ECC First Team year. The sophomore has proven herself to be one of the best defenders in the conference while leading all field players with 1,501 minutes on the pitch, playing the full 90 minutes in 15 of 17 games.
  • Graduate student Emma Beattie (Second Team), seniors Olivia Ingenito (Second Team) and Mikaela Barriga (Third Team, and junior Madison Keenan (Third Team), round out the eight total Lions that were All-ECC selections.
  • Ingenito leads the offense with 10 goals and 20 points, ranking third and fifth in the conference, respectively. Beattie has been a force through the midfield, netting a career-high 11 points on the back of five goals and one assist. The graduate student has been a crucial two-way player for the squad, limiting transition opportunities in the midfield for the opponent.
Against Roberts Wesleyan:
  • The two squads met in Rockville Centre just under a month ago October 11 with the teams batting to a 1-1 draw.
  • In the contest, Ingenito picked up the Lions goal with sophomore Sarah Cavallo picking up an assist.
  • In goal, Muñoz made five saves.
Playoff History Against The Redhawks:
  • The Lions and Redhawks will matchup in the postseason for the fourth time in the last five seasons, all coming in the East Coast Conference Tournament.
  • Molloy in 3-0 in that span with all three matchups coming in the semifinal.
  • In its most recent postseason matchup, the Lions took down the Redhawks, 1-0, November 5, 2023 in Rochester to advance to the ECC Final. 
Scouting the Redhawks:
  • Roberts Wesleyan concluded the regular season 4-1-2 in East Coast Conference play (8-3-4 overall).
  • The third-seeded Redhawks hosted sixth-seeded D'Youville in the ECC First Round Thursday, November 6. Roberts Wesleyan defeated D'Youville, 1-0, to advance to the semifinal.
  • Roberts Wesleyan sport six All-Conference selections, collecting three on the Second and Third Team. Offensively, All-ECC Second team selection Mackenzie Hagan leads the squad with 18 points on the back of seven goals and four assists. On the defensive side, fellow All-ECC Second Team honoree Cami Brescia paces the team with six assists.
  • In goal, Mia Tyndell has made 14 starts on the campaign, collecting a 1.11 goals against average while making 67 saves alongside a 0.82 save percentage.
  • Molloy is 10-4-2 all-time against Roberts Wesleyan.
