Women's Basketball (8-12, 3-7 ECC)

Regarding Molloy:
  • The Lions are looking to end the final month of the season strong after suffering losses in each of the last four contests.
  • Molloy dropped a close 59-51 game at home to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday (Jan. 31) before falling on the road to Mercy, 73-47. 
  • Senior Trinity Hudson notched her 13th double-double of the season against the Mavericks, putting up 13 points and 11 rebounds, keeping her fourth in the nation in double-doubles. The guard also remains second in rebounds per game (11.6) and is third in defensive rebounds per game (8.6) and fifth in total rebounds (233).
  • Fellow junior Danielle Hippner is also in the national top-10 in blocks per game (5th) and total blocks (6th), tallying 3.15 and 63, respectively after adding five on the week.
  • Despite the skid, the cardinal and white remain in the top-30 as a team in blocks per game (10th), rebounds per game (22nd), field goal percentage defense (26th), and defensive rebounds per game (27th).
  • With six conference games remaining in the schedule, Molloy sits on the outside of the playoff picture at seventh place. Ahead of the Lions is the College of Staten Island, who topped Molloy in overtime to start league play. The Lions' rematch with the Dolphins is scheduled for Feb. 28. 
Queens:
  • The Knights enter the week with a 6-15 record (2-8 ECC), splitting contests with Mercy and St. Thomas Aquinas last week. 
  • Despite a 31 point performance from Brianna Davis, Queens fell to Mercy in overtime on Wednesday from Fitzgerald Gymnasium, 69-60. The Knights saw double digit scoring from four of the five starters in a 66-61 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College to end the week on Saturday. 
  • Nkiru Awaka ranks 36th in the nation in rebounds per game (9.4) and is 43rd in offensive rebounds per game (3.4). 
  • The Lions topped the Knights in the previous match up, 61-36, in Rockville Centre. Jalea Abrams and Gianna Henriques each netted 10 points for Queens while Hudson and Hippner tallied 16 and 10, respectively, for Molloy. The two teams are currently separated by a game in the ECC standings, with Queens in eighth.

About the Lions:
  • Molloy is hoping for its first back-to-back wins of the campaign, coming off a definitive 79-66 defeat of Mercy on Saturday. 
  • The Lions had nearly all starters in double digits against the Mavericks, led by 22 points from Rob Matos, 14 points from Mick Browne, a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds from Matt Lane, and 10 points from Bryce Merchant. 
  • As a team, the cardinal and white continues to be a threat under the glass, ranking sixth in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (29.40), led by 5.32 from Bobby Connors. The Lions also continue to rely on strong free throw shooting, ranking ninth in the country with a 78.4 percentage. 
Queens:
  • The Knights are 12-9 on the season and 6-4 in league play and enter the week fourth in the ECC standings. 
  • Most recently, Queens split their games on the week against Mercy (W, 96-84) and St. Thomas Aquinas (L, 89-76). 
  • Led by 192 rebounds from Malik Bentinck, Queens ranks fourth in the nation in rebounds per game (42.76) and is in the top-20 in both offensive and defensive rebounds per game. The Knights are also second in the nation in blocks per game (6.0). 
  • Queens had the upper hand the last time the two teams faced off, 84-85. Sunnie Diamond led the way with 23 points with four Knight topping double digits. Connors (14) and Matos (13) led the scoring for Molloy. 

Indoor Track and Field
Saturday, February 10 at Big Apple Invite – All Day – Staten Island, N.Y.
 
Concerning Molloy:
  • The Lions were at the Scarlet Knight Open this past weekend at The Armory, competing against a difficult field. 
  • The men's 4x200 meter relay team (Gianni Macchio, Christian Canela, Juan Arango, and Emmanouil Paravalos), Schnyder Germain, and Jurrel Hall continued to be bright spots for a talented men's squad while the women's team continues to improve with top performances from Megan Sohl and Faith Rousseau. 
  • The Big Apple Invite will serve as a final tune up for all runners, jumpers, and throwers before the East Coast Conference Championship next weekend.
Women's Bowling (28-29)
Friday, February 9 – Sunday, February 11 at Mount Shootout – All Day – Mount Joy, PA
 
Scouting the Lions:
  • Molloy picked back up last weekend at the Griffin Baker Classic, finishing 11th overall with a total pinfall of 6,068. 
  • In pool play, the Lions defeated Wilmington, 957-876 but fell to Chestnut Hill, Belmont Abbey, Delaware State, and Kutztown. In the second day, the cardinal and white forced seven games against Caldwell, but it was not enough. In the deciding match, the Lions topped Norfolk State, 4-1, to take 11th place.
