Torre’s Career-High 30 Points Pushes Men’s Basketball Past D’Youville, Clinches #3 Seed in ECC Championship

Box Score Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The men's basketball team won its fourth consecutive conference matchup Saturday afternoon, defeating D'Youville, 87-77, inside Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improve to 11-16 (10-8 ECC), while the Saints fall to 2-26 (1-17 ECC). Molloy clinched the third-seed in the East Coast Conference Championship with the victory.
 
How It Happened
  • Molloy kicked off the first 3:58 of the game on a 12-6 scoring run, highlighted by six points from senior Steven Torre.
  • D'Youville closed the gap to one, 12-11, with 15:15 remaining in the opening stanza. 
  • The Lions put together a 17-0 scoring run, led by junior William Muller who scored seven points. Molloy led, 29-11, with 9:25 to go in the first half.
  • Over the next six minutes of game time, the Saints rallied with a 24-5 run to give them a one-point lead, 35-34 with 3:25 remaining.
  • With 2:32 to play, the road team knotted the score at 38, following a three-point basket from guard Nelson St. Louis.
  • Back-to-back baskets from redshirt sophomore Kendell Ogilvie and Torre gave Molloy a 44-40 advantage heading into halftime.
  • Coming out of the locker room, the two teams traded baskets, but consecutive baskets from D'Youville forwards Chris Stineman, and Latrell Butler gave the Saints a three-point lead, 52-49, with 16:02 to go.
  • Molloy reclaimed the lead, 54-52 following a three-point shot from Torre with 14:43 remaining.
  • Torre would go on to score the next eight points for the home team, keeping the maroon and white ahead by three, 62-59, with over 12 minutes left on the scoreboard.
  • Freshman Kenny Lazo netted five consecutive points to push the Lions advantage to six, 67-61, with 8:49 left in the contest.
  • A pair of foul shots from D'Youville guard Bryson Birdsong cut the deficit to three, 70-67, with under seven minutes to play.
  • The maroon and white extended its lead to eight, 76-68, following a jumper from Lazo with 4:42 to go.
  • With 2:55 remaining, Lazo hit a cutting Torre in transition who sank a layup to give the Lions a double-digit lead, 81-70.
  • The road team brought the Molloy lead to seven, 83-76, with 1:37 to play.
  • Molloy finished the game with four foul shots to close out the 87-77 victory.
 
Top Performances
  • Torre scored a career-high 30 points, shot 75 percent from the field, 50 percent from three, and grabbed five rebounds.
  • Muller netted 15 points, and shot a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
  • Junior Pierce Boczar tallied 12 points while shooting 4-of-5 from behind the three-point line in 12 minutes off the bench.
  • Lazo added nine points, assisted on four field goals, and swiped two steals.
  • Ogilvie chipped in with six points and a tied a team-high with six rebounds.
  • The team recognized the members of its senior class: Colin Brady, Justin Caldwell and Steven Torre in a pre-game Senior Day Ceremony.
 
Up Next
Molloy will return to Quealy Gymnasium Wednesday (March. 2) to host the first round of the East Coast Conference Championship. The Lions opponent is to be determined, but tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
