Rockville Centre, N.Y. – In a true game of runs that saw 14 lead changes, the fourth-seeded Molloy men's basketball team fell to the fifth-seeded D'Youville Saints, 86-80, Wednesday evening on Bob Houlihan Court. The Lions conclude the season with an 8-19 record while the Saints advance to the ECC Semifinal where they will take on top-seeded Daemen Saturday night.
How it Happened
- The opening 10 minutes of played were as advertised, as each team matched one another up and down the floor, leaving the game tied at 17.
- Through the next minute, the Lions put together a furious 7-0 run that was led by redshirt senior Seydina Mohamed Dieng who netted five points to give Molloy a 24-17 advantage.
- The momentum flipped over the next five minutes of action as D'Youville put together a dominant 18-2 run. Throughout the run the Saints shot four-of-five from three-point range and held the Lions to one field goal to take a nine-point lead, 35-26.
- The next 1:28 of action belonged to junior Chris Stokel, as he single handily brought the Lions back within one, 35-34, scoring the next seven of Molloy's eight points.
- The cardinal and white got a pair of lay ups from Dieng and junior Jared Weakly to end the first half and went into halftime in front, 38-36.
- Molloy carried the momentum into the second half, jumping out to its largest lead, 46-38, as part of an 8-2 run in the first 2:22 of the second stanza. The run saw sophomore Dylan Kopp and Weakly net a three-point field goal each and freshman Chase Timberlake sink a pair of free throws while holding the Saints to 1-of-5 from the floor.
- The road team once again would take back momentum, answering with a second massive 21-2 run through the next 5:08 of action to take its largest lead, 59-48, with 12:30 to play.
- The Saints shot 73 percent from the floor (8-of-11) led by Justin Moore who collected 10 points while holding the Lions to 1-of-7 form the field.
- Stokel would be the one to break the run and get Molloy back in it, scoring five of the next seven points to shrink the deficit to four, 59-55 in just 36 seconds.
- The contest turned into a back-and-forth game as the home team would chip away and come back within one, 66-65, with 6:32 remaining on the scoreboard.
- The next 5:02 of action saw the road team reestablish its double-digit lead, 82-72, with 1:30 to play on the back of outscoring the Lions 16-7.
- The 10-point deficit would be too much to overcome for the Lions in the ninety seconds as the Saints would go on to close the victory, 86-80.
Top Performances
- Stokel paced the squad with 21 points shooting 54 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range.
- Kopp followed with 15 points and team-high six assists.
- Weakly post a 14-point, nine-rebound performance while adding a game-high five blocks.
- Timberlake rounded out the top scorers with 13 points and a team-high two steals.
