Men's Basketball Tops Bridgeport, 76-61

Box Score Bridgeport, Conn. – The men's basketball team regained its winning form Wednesday evening, defeating the University of Bridgeport, 76-61, inside Harvey Hubell Gym. The Lions improve to 8-16 (7-8 ECC) while the Purple Knights fall to 9-15 (6-9 ECC) with the loss.
 
How It Happened
  • The Purple Knights came out of the gates quickly, compiling a 14-2 scoring run in the first six minutes of the game.
  • Molloy answered with a 16-4 scoring run to knot the score at 18, led by six points from senior Steven Torre, with 9:38 to go in the opening stanza.
  • Over the next six minutes of game time, Bridgeport put together a 10-2 run capped by a three-point basket from guard Tim Dawson, to reclaim the advantage, 28-20, with under four minutes to go.
  • With 1:06 to play in the first half, junior Pierce Boczar hit a three to bring the Lions within three, 30-27.
  • Boczar closed the half by draining another three-point shot. Molloy trailed, 32-31, heading into the half.
  • Coming out of the locker room Molloy came out on fire, putting together a 17-2 scoring run paced by freshman Kenny Lazo, who netted seven points in the first 2:32 while shooting a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor. Molloy led by 14, 48-34, with over 16 minutes to go.
  • Following a layup from redshirt sophomore Kendell Ogilvie, the maroon and white opened its largest lead of the game to 18, 56-38, with 12:07 left on the scoreboard.
  • Down but not out, Bridgeport took back momentum of the game over the next six minutes of game time. Answering with a 14-2 run to cut the deficit to four, 58-54, with 6:07 to play.
  • The maroon and white weathered the storm and reclaimed its double-digit lead, 66-56, following a layup from freshman Darren Fergus with over four minutes remaining.
  • With 1:07 to play, junior William Muller sank a layup to put Molloy ahead 13, 74-61.
  • The Lions closed the game with a pair of free throws, to win the game 76-61.
 
Top Performances
  • Torre collected his second double-double of the season scoring a game-high 20 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and shot 5-of-9 from three-point range.
  • Fergus added a double-double of his own, netting 12 points and securing 11 rebounds.
  • Lazo tallied a career-high 11 points and assisted on three field goals.
  • Ogilvie added nine points off the bench while shooting 50 percent from the field.
  • Muller stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds, and dished out a game-high six assists.
 
Up Next
Molloy will conclude its road trip Saturday (Feb. 19) as they travel to Rochester to play Roberts Wesleyan. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
