Flushing, N.Y. - The women's tennis team appeared in the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association's East Regional Tournament, held at the historic Billie Jean King Tennis Center and co-hosted by Queens and St. Thomas Aquinas College.
Doubles
- Doubles play started the afternoon with teams of sophomore Hannah Niggemeier and freshman Julie Riedel as well as freshman Alyssa Baur and junior Briana Gonzalez.
- Niggemeier and Reidel found themselves up against a seeded team from St. Thomas Aquinas, but forced an exciting match to an 8-5 loss.
- Bauer and Gonzalez were victorious for the maroon and white, earning both student-athletes' first ITA victory, 9-8. In the tournament, teams play to eight. If tied, they then play a tiebreaker game for the deciding point. The tandem thrilled with a 7-4 tie-breaking victory to earn a spot in the main draw, where they fell 8-0.
Singles
- Niggemeier (6-1, 6-2), Gonzalez (6-1, 6-1), and Reidel (6-2, 6-3) each fell in the main draw.
- Baur's fantastic day continued with a marathon match, dropping the first set 6-3 before responding with a 6-4 victory in the second game to force a super tiebreaker. The Germany native won, 10-7, to advance to the second round.
- In a match that extended into the next day, Baur once again fell, 6-1, in the first game but rallied to a 6-4 win to force yet another tiebreaker, where she was defeated 10-7.
"The ladies were fighters this weekend," explained Head Coach
Dr. Brendan Caputo. "In true team spirit, they supported each other through a grueling day. Alyssa was the break-out star of the weekend, winning a super tie-breaker in both singles and doubles and narrowly missing a spot in the round of 16 by three points."
