Men's Basketball Lead Slips Away, Falls in OT at Queens

Box Score Flushing, N.Y. – The men's basketball team fell to the Knights of Queens College, 76-68, Wednesday evening at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. The Lions fall to 2-8 and 2-1 in ECC play, while Queens College improves to 3-4 and 1-2 in conference play.
 
How It Happened
  • Senior Steven Torre scored seven of the Lions first 11 points, putting the road team in the lead, 11-7, with 17:11 remaining in the first half.
  • Following a pair of free throws from Elijah Blackman, the Knights trailed, 16-14, with 11:15 left on the scoreboard.
  • The road team put together a 7-2 scoring run, capped by a three-point basket from Torre to extend the lead to seven, 23-16, with under eight minutes to play
  • Queens College answered, going on a 7-0 run of its own, knotting the game at 23 with 4:28 remaining in the opening stanza.
  • The teams traded baskets to close the first half, but the home team sank a free throw with no time remaining, taking a 30-29 lead into the locker-room.
  • Freshman Matt Lane began the second half with three consecutive field goals, pushing the Lions ahead, 35-34, with 17:01 remaining in the second half.
  • Baskets from senior Justin Caldwell, junior Frankie Phelan, and Torre extended the Lions' lead to five, 44-39, with 13:27 left on the scoreboard.
  • With 9:31 to go, the home team came within two, 47-45, off a jump-shot from William Ellis.
  • A three-point basket from freshman Sey Dieng extended Molloy lead to seven, 54-47, with 5:28 remaining in regulation.
  • The maroon and white held a 58-53 lead following a lay-up from freshman Darren Fergus with 21 seconds to play.
  • The home team closed the second half on a 6-1 scoring run, knotting the score at 59 heading to overtime.
  • Queens began overtime on a 11-4 run and shot 50 percent from the field in the extra period, en route to the victory. 
Top Performers
  • Torre led all scorers with 23 points shooting 8-of-13 from the field while pulling down a team-high nine rebounds.
  • Fergus netted 12 points adding four rebounds and four assists.
  • Lane had a career-high 10 points shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor.
  • Dieng had six points and swiped three steals in 27 minutes off the bench.
 
Up Next
Molloy travels to Bloomfield on Saturday, December 18, to take on the host Bears in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
