Why Molloy: There are actually a few contributing factors that fostered my desire to further my education at Molloy College. The first one that I would like to share is simple! My older sister Ashlee Yearwood is a proud graduate of Molloy, Class of 2019. She attended Molloy College for five years earning her master's degree in Special Education and a minor in Theology and Religious Studies. Like my sister, I share a love of travel, I welcome opportunities to meet new people, and I embrace new experiences. Ashlee also shared her appreciation for the size of the College, describing that there were always opportunities to meet new people and try new things however there was also a family-type atmosphere. She shared that the professors took the time to get to know each of their students. This is something that is important to me as I believe that I will be most successful in a more personal college environment.
The next factor that leads me to Molloy is being recruited to represent the college, while playing for the women's basketball Program under the direction of Coach
Joe Pellicane. Basketball has been a passion of mine since I first stepped on the court at age seven. As a committed student and multi-sport athlete, it has been my unwavering goal to play basketball at the collegiate level. Throughout my recruiting process, I have recognized that Molloy College is the right match for me academically and athletically. I know that I will shine on the court as well as in the classroom at Molloy. Being a student-athlete has become a way of life for me, one that I wish to continue as I further my education in college. I am a goal setter. I embrace challenges. I work continuously to refine my skills on the court and in the classroom. While I am an individual, I value being a part of a team in so many ways and hold my commitment to my team and coaches in the highest regard. In addition, I was born and raised on Long Island, so it is great knowing that my family and friends are nearby and can come to cheer my teammates and me on!Â
The last significant factor contributing to my decision is the academic offerings at Molloy College. Currently, I am considering studying Criminal Justice. However, it is important to me that the college I attend also has a reputable Education program. I come from a family of educators. I consider it a blessing that Molloy's Education and Criminal Justice Programs are both highly regarded. Â Â Â
During my time at Molloy, I hope to further my education, grow as a person, student, and athlete, form new relationships all while being part of the basketball team and playing the game I love.
Career Goals: I hope to work in the field of Criminal Justice possibly in the area of Forensics and/or the FBI.Â
Favorite moment as an Athlete: Junior Nationals in July 2021 (Maryland) my AAU team's last tournament and the last AAU game we would ever play together. This was an intense game against a worthy competitor (Mid Atlantic Magic PA). There were four seconds left in the game we were down by two points, my coach Leon Martin called out an inbound play, the pass came to me, I drove to the basket and scored to tie the game and was fouled, resulting in an and-one. I made the foul shot, we won!
Premier AAU Basketball coach Leon Martin: "I had the privilege of coaching Sophia in travel since she was in fifth grade. During that time, I have watched Sophia grow not only on the court but off the court as well. Sophia has developed her game to the point where she is no longer a one-trick pony." Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
