Staten Island, N.Y. - The women's basketball team came up just short this afternoon in the regular season finale at the College of Staten Island, falling 68-61 from the Sports and Recreation Center. Molloy has earned the three-seed in next week's East Coast Conference Tournament and will host sixth-seeded University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday (Mar. 4) at 5:00 p.m. in the First Round match up. The win gave CSI the five-seed and will take on D'Youville in their First Round match.
How it Happened
- Three-straight layups gave the Dolphins an early 8-2 lead. Molloy responded with the next 11 in a row, including five from senior Sophia Yearwood and four from senior Rosa Rizzitelli, to lead 13-8.
- CSI closed the opening frame with two layups to bring the score within one, 13-12, after 10 minutes.
- The home team's run continued into the second frame with four more points. The Dolphins would maintain a lead through the end of the half. A layup from senior Colleen McCullagh ended the frame to bring the Lions within three, 24-21, at the break.
- A three-pointer from Yearwood, a jumper from sophomore Jamie Davneiro and a pair of free throws from Rizzitelli regained the lead for the Lions, 28-26.
- The score would be tied twice in the third quarter, but a 10-point run from CSI would put them in front, 38-33, midway through the frame.
- The Dolphins would maintain the advantage and lead 51-44 headed into the final quarter.
- Trailing by as many as nine, the Lions were able to regain a lead in part to a 9-0 run that saw field goals from McCullagh, Rizzitelli, and freshman Sharmeela Ugbogbo as well as a three-pointer from Yearwood.
- The lead would change hands four times in less than a one minute span before the Dolphins closed out the game on a 10-2 run to clinch the victory.
Top Performances
- McCullagh led the Lions with 19 points and added six rebounds and two assists.
- Yearwood followed with 18 points, shooting 50 percent from both the floor (7-for-14) and from long distance (4-of-8), to go with five rebounds and two steals.
- Rizzitelli and Ugbogbo both had double-doubles on the afternoon. Rizzitelli tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists while Ugbogbo led with 15 rebounds and added 10 points.
- Davneiro topped the squad with five assists and a career-high four steals.
