Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The women's basketball team fell to the Mercy University Mavericks this afternoon from the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center, 72-57. The loss sets the Lions at 11-15 on the season and 9-5 in East Coast Conference play headed into the final week of the regular season while Mercy improves to 20-6 (14-1 ECC) with the win. Molloy has clinched the three-seed in the upcoming ECC Tournament following D'Youville's loss to Daemen this afternoon.
How it Happened
- The Lions started off hot, sinking the game's first eight points with field goals from seniors Colleen McCullagh and Sophia Yearwood as well as freshman Sharmeela Ugbogbo.
- The Mavericks responded with six-straight points but McCullagh and Ugbogbo would score to maintain Molloy's advantage at 12-6.
- Mercy would then tear off a run of seven points to take the lead for the first time in the afternoon, 13-12, before leading by four, 19-15, at the end of the opening 10 minutes.
- Back-to-back buckets from Ugbogbo and sophomore Jamie Davneiro tied the game early in the second, but a three-pointer regained a lead for Mercy that the Lions would spend the rest of the game chasing.
- After trailing by double digits to start the third quarter, Molloy ended the frame on a seven-point run that saw four points from senior Rosa Rizzitelli and a pull-up three-pointer from sophomore Grace Trotta to make it just a one-point Maverick advantage headed into the final 10 minutes, 50-49.
- The fourth quarter would be a struggle for the Lions' offense, however, hitting just three field goals and one foul shot in the final frame while the home team shot over 50 percent from the field for the win.
