UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 14, 2017) – The fourth-seeded Molloy baseball team was defeated by the second-seeded LIU Post Pioneers, 9-7, in the championship round of the East Coast Conference tournament. The Lions finished the season 21-29.
Senior
Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) led the maroon and white with two hits and two RBIs. Junior
Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior
Anthony Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) registered two hits and drove in a run, and junior
Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.) chipped in with two hits.
LIU Post (30-18) scored two runs in the first inning to go ahead 2-0.
The Lions answered in the second. Freshman
Sean Hogan (East Meadow, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to right field to score Rahn.
The Pioneers added a run in the third to make it 3-1.
Molloy cut LIU Post's lead to one, 3-2, in the fourth. Senior
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) singled to center field, and Navetta scored on a fielding error by the center fielder.
In the bottom half of the fourth, the Pioneers scored three more runs to increase their lead to 6-2.
The Lions tied the game in the seventh. With the bases loaded, senior
Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, which scored McCarty. Navetta then hit a sacrifice fly, which scored Galanoudis. Later in the frame, Rahn hit a two-RBI double to knot the score, 6-6.
The Pioneers took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh with three runs.
Molloy cut the lead to 9-7 in the eighth, Galanoudis drilled an RBI triple to right center, which scored McCarty. The Lions threatened in the ninth, but couldn't get the tying run across.
