Hogan, Podell Drive in Two in 9-1 Win Over Caldwell University

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 11, 2017) – Molloy baseball picked up a 9-1 victory as they stepped out of conference play against Caldwell University. Senior Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) and freshman Sean Hogan (East Meadow, N.Y.) each drove in two in the effort. The team now sits at 12-18 on the year.

The Lions got on the board early, as senior Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) singled to start the home half of the first inning before stealing second base. Junior Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) drove him in with a single through the left side. Redshirt senior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) doubled to left field before Hogan drove both runners in with a single to left to make it 3-0.

In the third inning, sophomore Michael Wall (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and junior Joseph Nastasi (South Salem, N.Y.) both reached on singles. Freshman Jake Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) walked to load the bases before Podell drew a walk to score a run. Murphy would score following an error by the Cougars' catcher before a single from Rahn gave the Lions a 6-0 lead.

The maroon and white extended their lead in the bottom of the third inning on RBI singles from Murphy and Podell before Rahn scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth to give Molloy the 9-0 lead.

The Cougars drove in a run in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single from Anthony Frascati (Bloomfield, N.J.).

On the afternoon, Rahn went 2-for-2 with one RBI. Murphy and Hogan each went 2-for-3; Murphy stole two bases while Hogan drove in two runs. Junior Kevin Hiss (Merrick, N.Y.) pitched seven innings, allowing four hits while striking out five. In relief, sophomores Ryan Doerschug (Commack, N.Y.) and Anthony Pedraita (Glen Cove, N.Y.) each pitched one inning.

The Lions begin a four-game series with Mercy College on Friday (Apr. 14). The game is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.
