FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2017) – The baseball team concluded its series with Queens, falling 7-2 to the Knights. The Lions now sit at 11-18 on the season and 6-5 in East Coast Conference play while Queens improves to 9-13 (3-7 ECC).
The maroon and white fell behind 2-0 after the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, junior
Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.) reached on an error by the Knights' third baseman and advanced to second following a ground out from senior
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.). Senior
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) drove in the run with a single to center field to cut the lead in half.
The Knights would extend the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning as a single up the middle by Joel Mendez (Bronx, N.Y.) scored two runs. Queens added a fifth run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh before a triple from Andrew Navarez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in the Knights' final two runs.
In the top of the ninth, senior
Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y) reached on error at third base. Freshman
Matthew Imbrogno (Wantagh, N.Y.) entered the game as a pinch runner, advancing to second on a wild pitch before stealing third base. McCarty reached safely the next at-bat on an error to score Imbrogno. The Lions' rally ultimately fell short, as the squad fell 7-2.
Podell went 3-of-4 at the plate with one RBI while McCarty drove in the other run. Junior
Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) pitched 5.1 innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in the loss.
Molloy is back in action tomorrow (Apr. 11) as they face Caldwell University at Mitchel Field Athletic Complex at 4:00 p.m.
