(Mar. 25, 2017) – Molloy baseball, sparked by a nine-run seventh inning, topped the Knights of Queens College 10-4 in a single game on Saturday (Mar. 25) at Mitchel Field Athletic Complex. The Lions improve to 4-13 (1-0 East Coast Conference) while the Knights fall to 6-6 (0-1 ECC) with the loss. Senior
Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs with four strike outs in the win to improve to 1-2 on the season.
The Knights scored the game's first run in the top of the second, as freshman Louis Antos (West Islip, N.Y.) grounded out, but scored sophomore Andrew Navarez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to give Queens a 1-0 lead. The score would stand until the top of the fifth, when the Knights added another run on a fielder's choice from junior Thomas Parish (Cortland Manor, N.Y.).
In the bottom half of the inning, senior
Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.) singled to right field before advancing to second on a single from junior
Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.). Dillon would score after senior
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) reached on an error by the Knights to cut the lead in half. Queens would go back up by two runs in the top of the sixth, as senior
Joe Morris (Syosset, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk.
The maroon and white started off the seventh inning with a McCarty single to left center. The junior advanced to second on an error before being driven in on a single from senior
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.). The Lions would tie the contest two batters later on a single through the right side by junior
Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.). Junior
Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line to score Navetta and Podell before junior
Joseph Nastasi (South Salem, N.Y.) drove two more runs home with a single to right center. Molloy would score its ninth run of the inning as McCarty scored on a balk by Cameron Burt (Mattituck, N.Y.) to go ahead 10-3.
In the top of the ninth, the Knights added their fourth run on a single from junior Joseph Pidoto (Mount Sinai, N.Y.), but the freshman reliever
Anthony Vano (Babylon, N.Y.) and the Molloy defense would retire the side to end the game.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow (Mar. 26) as they take on Assumption College in a doubleheader at Mitchel Athletic Complex. First-pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
