UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2017) – The Molloy baseball team won their second and third straight contests, sweeping the Greyhounds of Assumption College 6-0 and 2-0 in a doubleheader at Mitchel Field Athletic Complex. In the first game, redshirt senior
Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits and striking out a career-high eleven batters while fellow senior
Dominic Danetti (Wantagh, N.Y.) allowed one hit with eight strikeouts in a complete effort in the second game. The maroon and white now sit at 6-13 on the season.
Game One: Molloy 6, Assumption 0
Both pitchers cruised through the first three innings of play, with no batter registering a hit. In the bottom of the fourth inning, senior
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) reached on a single to short, breaking the streak. A single from junior
Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) pushed Murphy to third before junior
Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) drove both runners home with a single up the middle to put Molloy ahead 2-0.
The Lions would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Navetta pushed a single through the left side to score Murphy before a sacrifice fly from redshirt senior
Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) made it 4-0 in favor of the home team. In the bottom of the seventh, senior
Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch to put the maroon and white up 5-0 before Navetta drove in his second run of the day with a single down the right field line. Kelly would retire six of the next seven batters to give Molloy the 6-0 victory.
Game Two: Molloy 2, Assumption 0
Once again, Danetti and junior Tom Horstkotte (Mildord, Mass.) of the Greyhounds pitched flawlessly through the first two and a half innings, with neither team registering a hit. In the bottom of the third inning, Murphy broke the deadlock, bunting his way to first base before advancing to second on an error by Chudoba. The short stop would score on a single from senior
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) for the game's first run. The third baseman stole second base, and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Assumption catcher. A triple from Rahn cleared the bases and put Molloy ahead 2-0. The Lions would maintain their lead through the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the sweep.
Molloy continues East Coast Conference play on Wednesday (Mar. 29) as they face Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 4:00 p.m. at Mitchel Field.
