Baseball Defeated by Adelphi, 6-2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (March 23, 2017) - The Molloy baseball team fell to the Adelphi Panthers, 6-2, Thursday evening at the Mitchel Athletic Complex. The Panthers used a three-run seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie. The Lions moved to 3-13 with the loss.

Adelphi (10-6) opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. Senior Zach Levinson (Staten Island, N.Y.) doubled down left field line to plate Kory Cassara (Mastic, N.Y.) and make it 1-0. Later in the inning, sophomore Michael Cattani (Warwick, N.Y.) grounded into a fielder's choice to score Levinson and increase the lead to 2-0.

Molloy answered in the bottom of the third. Junior Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to score junior Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y) to cut the Panthers' advantage to 2-1. Junior Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) tied the score at two with a RBI single.

The teams stayed tied until the seventh inning. Robert Vani (Garden City, N.Y.) hit a RBI double to put the road team back ahead, 3-2. Two batters later, Cassara hit a two-run home run to left field to extend Adelphi's lead to 5-2.

The Panthers added a run in the top of the ninth, after, Cassara hit a sacrifice fly.

The Lions threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Senior Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.) started the inning with back to back singles. With two outs, senior Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) walked sending the tying run to the plate. But Adelphi closer Andrew Sesto (West Islip, N.Y.) was able to get senior Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Junior Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) pitched seven innings, gave up five runs on eight hits, and struck out five batters in the loss.

Molloy returns to action Saturday (Mar.25) when it hosts Queens College in its East Coast Conference opener. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
