Women's Basketball at Saint Thomas Aquinas - 1:00 p.m.
The Molloy College women's basketball team (15-4) will be looking to redeem themselves today against the Spartans. In the last meeting of these teams on Nov. 22, the Lions were handed a crushing 62-31 loss. However, the maroon and white have only lost three games since then, and are on a season-high eight-game winning streak after a 65-45 win over LIU Post on Wednesday (Jan. 18). The contest has critical meaning for the shaping of the ECC standings, as both teams are currently tied for second-place with 7-2 records in conference play.
Senior
Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.) scored a career-high 24 points while also chipping in six rebounds and four assists.
Symone Kelly (Wyandanch, N.Y.) added 17 points and eight rebounds while also rejecting four shots. The pair has been hot all season, averaging 13.3 and 13.7 points per game, respectively. They are second only to
Kamala Thompson (Selden, N.Y.). The guard has started all 19 games for Molloy, averaging a team-leading 14.6 points per game.
The Spartans (13-5) are coming off a tough 58-55 loss against Assumption College. They shot a miserable 26% from the field and only managed to fall by just three points. Their leading scorer, Jenna Erickson (Melrose, N.Y.) had 18 points in the loss. They will also expect senior Kaitlyn McCue (Bergenfield, N.J.) to have a big game, as she had 17 points and 12 rebounds in the last game versus the maroon and white.
Men's Basketball at Saint Thomas Aquinas - 3:00 p.m.
The Molloy College Lions (10-8) are coming off a last-second nail-bitter against LIU Post that saw the Lions walk away with a 72-68 win. Seniors
Charlie Marquardt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) and
Jaylen Morris (Amherst, N.Y.) led the way with 17 and 15 points, respectively. They travel to take on Saint Thomas Aquinas College (14-4) in an important game for both teams in terms of playoff seeding. The Spartans are currently tied for first-place with a 7-2 conference record, while Molloy sits at third, 6-3 in ECC play. When the teams met last (Dec. 3), it was a close contest, but the Spartans earned the 72-70 victory. Marquardt scored a game-high 25 points in the loss.
Saint Thomas Aquinas College has won four straight games, most recently a 76-73 victory over Philadelphia University (Jan. 18). Chaz Watler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) put up 22 points to help in the team rally from a 22-point deficit in the second half. When the Spartans last met Molloy, sophomore Jonathan Lawton (Williamstown, N.J.) scored 21 points and Justin Reyes (Haverhill, Mass.) had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds while also tallying 6 steals.
