Veletanga's Free Kick Secures Men's Soccer 1-1 Draw Against Holy Family

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team secured a 1-1 draw against the Tigers of Holy Family Tuesday evening at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions sit at 1-1-1 on the campaign while the Tigers move to 1-1-2.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers got on the board in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 lead. After forcing a turnover, Jackson Kiss sent in a cross that found Luiz Recchimuzzi for the contest's first goal.
  • Through the next 20 minutes, the Lions would be held without a shot while the Tigers collected five, including two on goal that forced senior Anthony Martinez to make a pair of saves.
  • Holy Family looked to add one more in the final minutes of the first half. In the 44th minute, a header from Adriel Grant was knocked off the goal line by graduate student Matt Star before Martinez would make one last save with 35 seconds left.
  • The game headed into halftime with the home team behind, 1-0, being held without a shot target in the opening 45 minutes.
  • 12 minutes into the second half, junior Sean Lee connected for a header following a cross, but sent it high of the cross bar.
  • In the 61st minute, the cardinal and white were awarded a free kick, following a yellow card just outside of the 18-yard box.
  • Sophomore Jack Veletanga stepped up and blasted a low-lining shot toward the right post and found the back of the net to knot the contest at one.
  • 1:30 later, the road team had a defender sent off due to a second yellow card, putting them with 10 men for the final 28 minutes of the contest.
  • Molloy's offense would begin to take advantage, totaling three shots, two on target from the 63rd to the 66th minute, but both shots would be saved by Tigers goalkeeper Joey Phillips.
  • Martinez would be forced to make a pair of saves in the 70th and 77th minutes to keep the contest deadlocked.
  • In the 86th minute, Veletanga took a corner kick and connected with Star inside the box, but his attempt was grazed by a Tiger defender and sent over the crossbar.
  • Molloy's final chance came with 1:06 to play as junior Charlie Morgan fired a shot to the nearside post that would go just wide, ending the contest in a 1-1 draw.
