Men’s Soccer Slips to Assumption in Home Opener

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – A late goal from the visitors prevented a result for the Molloy men's soccer team, as they fell to the Greyhounds of Assumption, 2-1, in their home-opener Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions move to 1-1 while the Greyhounds improve to 1-1.

How it Happened
  • The two squads generated two shots apiece in the opening 10 minutes, but none of the chances landed on target.
  • The first shot on goal of the game came from Assumption in the 14th minute, but junior Callum Hunt made a comfortable save.
  • Molloy's first scoring threat paid dividends in the 34th minute. 1:02 into entering the contest, freshman Mael Pierre Paul slipped in a pass to junior Sean Lee, who buried it into the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • The lead was short lived, as the Greyhounds converted on a corner kick 2:28 later to bring the contest back to all square, 1-1.
  • The road team totaled three shots in the final five minutes of the first half, forcing one save from Hunt sending the game into halftime tied at one.
  • 3:33 into the second half, freshman Sverre Olsen looked to reclaim the lead for the Lions, but Assumption goalkeeper Federico Foganio made a clean save.
  • The match turned into a possession battle, with shots hard to come by through the next 10 minutes. In the 60th minute after winning a corner kick, sophomore Jack Veletanga connected with graduate student Matt Star at the back post, but the header was sent just wide of the post.
  • The physicality of the game picked up over the next 20 minutes, with a pair of yellow cards being issued alongside a total of seven fouls combined.
  • In the 87th minute, junior Yahel Caudillo Paramo fired a left-footed shot from the right side towards the far post, but Foganio got a hand on it to send it over the bar to deny the chance.
  • The Greyhounds pounced in the final seconds. Ludvig Svegart sent in a through ball that connected with Cody Holbert who tucked inside the near post to clinch the game for the road team, 2-1.
