Sparkill, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team and the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas battled to a scoreless draw Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field. As a result, the Lions sit at 3-1-3 overall and 1-0-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Spartans move to 2-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in league play.
How it Happened
- The Spartans challenged for a scoring chance in the third minute, but junior goalkeeper Callum Hunt made a save.
- Molloy's first shot on goal came in the ninth minute with a header from freshman Massimo Bruno, but Spartans goalkeeper Dante Muntane would deny the chance.
- The Lions continued to pressure the back line of the Spartans in the 13th minute. Freshman Mael Pierre Paul generated momentum to fire a shot that would force a save.
- Saint Thomas Aquinas attempted to get on the board in the 24th and 31st minute, but Hunt would come down with a pair of comfortable saves.
- The home team generated three shots in the final 14 minutes of the first half, but none would land on target sending the game into halftime deadlocked at zero.
- Sophomore Jack Veletanga began the second half for the Lions with a pair of shots four seconds apart in the 58th minute, but both shots were blocked by the Spartans back line.
- Through the next three minutes, the Spartans totaled three shots with two blocked by the Lions defense and one going wide of target.
- Molloy would go on to generate another two chances through the following seven minutes, but freshman Massimo Fargnoli would have his shot blocked before Bruno saw his shot go high of target.
- The 74th minute saw the home team challenge Hunt for the game's first goal, but once again Hunt would be there to make the save.
- The cardinal and white answered with a shot on goal of their own two minutes later. Graduate student Jack Hynes created space for a shot that would saved by Muntane.
- On the counter following the save on Hynes, St. Thomas Aquinas bolted down the field, threatening to take the lead, but Hunt denied the chance with a save.
- The Lions final chance came in the 86th minute when junior William Darvid sought out a chance to score, but his attempt would be saved.
- St. Thomas Aquinas would not tally a shot on target for the remainder of the contest, ending the game in a scoreless draw.
Top Performances
- Bruno, Pierre Paul, and Veletanga tied a team-high two shots.
- Darvid, Hynes, and freshman Vincent Martinez totaled a shot on goal off the bench.
- In goal, Hunt made six saves.
