Men’s Soccer Slips Against AIC

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team fell to the Yellow Jackets of American International, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. As a result, the Lions move to 1-2-2 on the campaign, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 1-1-3.
 
How it Happened
  • In the seventh minute, junior Aidan Kolbe connected on a header following a cross to the near post but put the attempt high.
  • After the road team sent a shot off target in the 18th minute, graduate student Matt Laya-Vetell had a chance inside the 18-yard box but sent it over the crossbar.
  • In the 25th minute following a corner, sophomore Bejamin Bern sent a header to the back post that was saved by an AIC defender and the rebound header from Kolbe was denied, keeping the contest scoreless.
  • Laya-Vetell and Kolbe would tally a shot on goal apiece in the final 12 minutes of the opening half, but both were saved by AIC's goalkeeper Javier Sola Martinez. The game went into halftime without a score.
  • Eight minutes into the second half, graduate student Jarvis Cleal created an opportunity with a screaming shot that just went high of the crossbar.
  • The 63rd minute saw sophomore Charlie Morgan streak down the right flank looking to score but his shot would be denied.
  • Four minutes later, senior Matt Star eluded two defenders to set up his left foot shot towards the upper right corner, but once again Sola Martinez would leap to make the save.
  • In the 71st minute, AIC began to apply pressure when Simba Pelletier challenged sophomore goalkeeper Callum Hunt on a mini breakaway, but Hunt off his line made the save keeping the Yellow Jackets off the board.
  • 10 minutes would go by until the contests next shot that came from Kolbe, but his attempt would not land on target.
  • With 4:01 to play, the road team would break the seal, netting a goal following a header to pull in front, 1-0.
  • The final attempt at goal came from graduate student O'Neil Dawes with 36 seconds to play, but his shot would be blocked as the Yellow Jackets would go on to secure the victory, 1-0.
Top Performances
  • Kolbe topped the offense with five shots including three on goal.
  • Laya-Vetell and Start collected two shots with one coming on goal apiece.
  • In goal, Hunt was forced to make one save.
Up Next
Molloy will have a week to prepare for East Coast Conference play as they'll travel to take on the College of Staten Island Saturday, September 27. The contest is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
