Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The men's basketball team had its largest margin of victory of the season this afternoon, topping the Queens College Knights, 92-68. Molloy improved to 8-12 on the season and 4-5 in East Coast Conference play while Queens fell to 8-13 (4-5 ECC).
How it Happened
- The Lions came out of the gate firing, opening the contest on a 16-2 run that included seven points from senior Mick Browne.Â
- A 10-5 run from the Knights would cut the deficit back to single digits, 21-12, but a layup from sophomore Rob Matos and a three-pointer from freshman Dylan Kopp put Molloy ahead 26-12 with 8:27 left in the first half.
- In the final four minutes, a 7-0 run from Queens brought the visitors within six, 36-30. The teams would enter the halftime break with Molloy leading 40-34.
- The cardinal and white opened the second frame on a 9-4 run that included four points from both Matos and junior Payton Shumpert to lead 49-38.
- Back-to-back field goals from Queens would cut the lead to seven, but an 11-4 run from Molloy quickly regained the lengthy margin for the Lions, leading 60-46 with 12 minutes to play.
- The home team would lead by as many as 29 before securing the victory.Â
Top Performances
- Matos led the Lions with 23 points, shooting 11-of-23 from the field to go with five assists and five rebounds.Â
- Shumpert netted 16 points to go with six rebounds.
- Kopp, Browne, and graduate student Matt Lane each scored 12 points.
- Lane added 18 rebounds to go with a career-high three assists and three steals.Â
- Kopp and sophomore Bryce Merchant each also added three assists with Merchant adding 12 points and two blocks.
