Wilmington, Del. – The Molloy men's basketball team fell to the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom, 94-86, Tuesday evening. As a result, the Lions sit at 1-10 on the campaign, while the Lightning improve to 6-4.
How it Happened
- Back-and-forth action for both squads to kick off the contest, but a 9-0 run from the Lions gave them a 15-8 lead 5:39 into the contest. The run was paced by junior Jared Weakly who netted seven points collecting a pair of layups and one three-point field goal.
- Goldey-Beacom responded over the next 4:10 putting together a furious 14-4 run, shooting 60 percent from the field and forcing four Molloy turnovers to jump in front, 22-19.
- The remainder of the first half saw the contest have nine lead changes and four ties with the final lead change favoring the Lions, as junior Manu Alford sunk a free throw to give the Lions a 41-40 lead heading into halftime.
- The opening 3:03 of the second half was more of the same, with both teams going shot-for-shot with the Lions holding a 51-50 lead.
- As they did the in the first half, the Lightning would caught fire, storming to a 20-4 run on the back of 80 percent shooting to take its largest lead of the game, 70-55, with 11:54 remaining.
- Down but not out, the Lions would punch right back rallying to a 17-4 run where they shot 80 from the field and induced five turnovers to come back within two, 74-72, with under seven minutes left on the scoreboard.
- The run saw five Lions find their way onto the scoresheet, led by sophomore Sebastian Bosquez who netted six points while Alford collected five.
- After Goldey-Beacom reclaimed its multi-possession lead, 82-74, with 5:09 remaining, a mini 7-3 run from Molloy that saw sophomore Dylan Kopp net two field goals and junior Bryce Merchant hit a three, to cut the deficit to four, 85-81, heading into the final media timeout with 2:30 left to play.
- Following the timeout, the home team netted six straight points and would pull ahead for good to clinch the victory, 94-86.
Top Performances
- Merchant topped the offense scoring 18 points while securing nine rebounds, tying a game-high.
- Kopp tallied 17 points on 57 percent shooting.
- Weakly stuffed the stat sheet, totaling 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists, five blocks, and two steals.
- Alford and Bosquez rounded out the top scorers netting 11 and 10 points, respectively.
- The Lions shot 52 percent from the field, marking the third time they've eclipsed the 50 percent mark on the campaign.
