Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team fought tooth and nail against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas, but ultimately fell, 4-2, Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. As a result, the Lions move to 1-3-4 overall and 0-1-2 in East Coast Conference play, while the Spartans improve to 5-2-2 overall and 4-0 in league play.
How it Happened
- The Lions attempted to strike first in the fifth minute when sophomore Charlie Morgan dialed up a shot that would be saved.
- In the 13th minute, St. Thomas Aquinas cracked the scoreboard after Jorge De La Vibora split three defenders to put them ahead, 1-0.
- The Spartans added to its lead in the 26th minute, 2-0, when Guiherme Alegria tapped in a shot in the six-yard box.
- The road team capped its dominating first half with a third goal in the 30th minute off a rebound and took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
- Molloy struck 13 minutes into the second half, when senior Danu Kinsella Bishop tapped in a pass from junior Aidan Kolbe to cut the deficit to two, 3-1.
- The contest would turn into an unsettled game through the next 10 minutes, as physical play would take over the contest with only two shots combined in the span.
- In the 72nd minute Kinsella Bishop capitalized. Senior Matt Star played the ball forward, that was misplayed by the Spartans goalkeeper and Kinsella Bishop guided the ball into the net, shrinking the lead down to one, 3-2.
- 28 seconds later, St. Thomas Aquinas reclaimed its two-goal lead, 4-2, after Alegria netted his second of the game.
- Star would generate chances in the 79th and 86th minute, with a pair of perfect header attempts, but both chances would be denied.
- The final chance of the contest came in the 88th minute when freshman Jack Veletanga drove a free kick that would be saved, ending the contest with the Spartans victorious, 4-2.
