Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – A second half goal from freshman
Danu Kinsella Bishop helped the Molloy men's soccer team play to a 1-1 draw Wednesday afternoon against the Mercy Mavericks at Mercy Field. As a result, the Lions move to 1-2-4 on the season, while the Mavericks move to 2-3-3.
How it Happened
- The opening 25 minutes was a possession battle as the two teams combined for just four shots, but none of them would land on target.
- In the 28th minute, Mercy put together a scoring chance when Santiago Serrano fired a shot that was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Callum Hunt.
- The 39th minute saw the Mavericks earn a penalty kick after a foul inside the 18-yard box. One-on-one with Hunt, Mercy forward Martin Hugo fired the attempt into the right corner to put the Mavericks on top, 1-0.
- With 3:24 to go in the first half Kinsella Bishop looked for the equalizer, but his attempt was saved by Mercy goalkeeper Mateo Sanchez, sending the game into halftime with Mercy in front, 1-0.
- 2:48 into the second half, Hunt made a huge save on Mateo Bacigalupo to keep the contest at bay.
- In the 54th minute, Kinsella Bishop had his second opportunity to bring the contest back to all square, but once again Sanchez would deny the opportunity.
- The possession battle would return over the next 15 minutes of action. The cardinal and white would total three shots to control the chances, but none would land on goal.
- The Lions were finally able to break the seal in the 72nd minute. After hunt sent in a goal kick, graduate student Jack Hynes headed a ball towards Kinsella Bishop, who was able to tuck it inside the crossbar to bring the contest back to all square, 1-1.
- Following the goal, the Mavericks went back on the hunt in search of the contests go ahead tally. Mercy put together two shots in a 1:24 span between the 79th and 80th minute, but Hunt calmly made a pair of saves to keep the game tied.
- In the 83rd minute, Kinsella Bishop missed the game-winner by a matter of inches, firing a shot that would ring off the crossbar and out of play.
- One minute later the road team put together one final chance to pull ahead. Freshman Cesar Chavez dialed up a shot that would be saved by Sanchez, finishing the contest in a 1-1 draw.
Top Performances
- Kinsella Bishop found the back of the net for the second consecutive game while leading the team with seven shots and three coming on goal.
- Hynes collected his first point as a Lion with an assist.
- In goal, Hunt made five saves tying a season-high.
