Volleyball Sweeps Wilmington

Garden City, N.Y. - The volleyball team ended the weekend on a high note, sweeping the Wildcats of Wilmington University this afternoon from the Center for Recreation and Sport from the campus of Adelphi University. The Lions sit at 7-4 on the season now while Wilmington falls to 4-5.

How it Happened
  • Wilmington led to start the first set, but a seven-point run from Molloy that featured three kills from graduate student Kiarra Roth and two aces from graduate student Julia Zalta, put the Lions in front 13-10.
  • The Wildcats would tie the score at 13 and the score would be tied four more times, including 20-20.
  • Back-to-back kills from freshman Isabella Rios paired with blocks from Zalta and senior Sara Hiebert gave the Lions a 23-20 lead that they would maintain through the end of the set.
  • The teams would be tied five times to start the second set until the cardinal and white fired off another seven-point run on the back of another two aces and a kill from Zalta to lead, 15-8.
  • The Wildcats would come within three multiple times, but the Lions maintained the advantage to take a 2-0 set lead.
  • For the third-straight set, the teams would exchange scoring drives and found themselves knotted at 17-17.
  • Molloy would score the next six points, four of which came from kills from Rios, who also added a block with Hiebert, as well as an ace from senior Angelina Scichilone, to lead 23-17.
  • Later, a kill from Roth would seal the final point to give Molloy the victory.
  • Roth had a double-double on the afternoon, leading with 22 kills while adding 10 digs.
  • Rios joined her in double digits, just missing out on a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs.
  • Senior Roberta Monticelli rounded out the top offense with seven kills.
  • Zalta fired off four aces and nine digs to go with two blocks and 43 assists.
  • Sophomore Aria Miller's 18 digs paced the squad, adding four assists and two aces.
  • Senior Alex Brown tallied six digs, three aces, and two assists.

The Lions return to Rockville Centre and Bob Houlihan Gymnasium on Tuesday (Sept. 24) evening, as they take on Pace University at 7:00 p.m.
