Men’s Soccer Shut Out Against New Haven

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team fell to the Chargers of the University of New Haven, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions move to 2-2 on the campaign, while the Chargers improve to 3-0-1.
 
How it Happened
  • The first chance of the game came from Molloy as freshman Charlie Morgan was able to fire a shot, but the chance was saved by New Haven goalkeeper Archie Watts in the 10th minute.
  • 10 minutes later, the Lions generated another chance this time from freshman Matt Star, but the forward couldn't convert.
  • New Haven generated its first chance in the 22nd minute with a header from Mattia Maiello but the attempt was wide of target.
  • Another minute would go by and Maiello had a second opportunity, but this time the attempt was saved by freshman Callum Hunt.
  • Sophomore Steph Maurice came off the bench and immediately had a scoring chance in the 29th minute, but the shot went wide right of frame.
  • The scoreless tie was broken in the 34th minute, when New Haven scored from point blank range to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The best chance of the afternoon for the cardinal and white came in the 39th minute, when freshman Eduardo da Rosa Sostisso took a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
  • The freshman fired and hit the crossbar square on, the follow up attempt was cleared away, keeping the Lions off the scoreboard.
  • Three minutes later New Haven would convert for its second goal of the afternoon, with a shot from the left flank and into the back of the net to extend its lead, 2-0, heading into halftime.
  • In the second half, senior Nick Leon started the stanza with a chance but was evidently denied.
  • The game would then head into a possession battle through the 76th minute, as neither team would give an inch of space.
  • In the 79th minute, senior Sean Salgueiro found space to fire a shot off his left foot, but the ball just curled high over the left post.
  • The final chance of the contest came from da Rosa Sostisso in the final 30 seconds, but his shot went high, the horn went off and New Haven came away with a 2-0 victory.

  • Da Rosa Sostisso led the team with two shots.
  • In goal, Hunt made two saves.
