Maurice Dishes Out Three Assists In Men’s Soccer Triumph

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team began its home portion of its scheduled Wednesday afternoon defeating the Chargers of Dominican University, 4-2, at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improve to 2-1 on the campaign, while the Chargers move to 0-2. Sophomore Steph Maurice handed out three assists to tie a single-game record in the victory.

How it Happened
  • The opening 10 minutes of the contest was a feeling out period for both squads, as neither team was able to generate any chances.
  • In the 13th minute, senior Sean Salgueiro sent a header wide of target.
  • Dominican looked to net the first goal of the contest in the 16th minute, but freshman Callum Hunt denied the opportunity.
  • Another 10 minutes of action would go by without any recorded shots, with both teams back lines of defense playing stout.
  • Molloy broke the scoreboard in the 27th minute, while being hounded by two defenders Maurice sent a ball into the center of the box, found Salgueiro who finished to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.
  • Hunt would make two saves in a 1:30 time period in the 29th and 31st minute, to keep Dominican off the board.
  • Maurice looked to extend the early lead to two, but his attempt was denied by Dominican goalkeeper Joshua Kaandorp in the 34th minute.
  • Neither team would generate a chance for the remainder of the half, sending the game into halftime with Molloy in front, 1-0.
  • The cardinal and white would dominate the opening 19 minutes of the second half, totaling four shots, but none of them could find the back of the net, keeping the contest at 1-0.
  • The Lions inched closer to a double-digit lead as the half went on. Freshman Eduardo da Rosa Sostisso and sophomore Mathew Broadhead saw their opportunities just go wide of target in the 69th and 72 minute.
  • Molloy would find its second goal in the 73rd minute, when Maurice put a ball through the center of the pitch and found da Rosa Sostisso on a break away. The freshman made the most of his opportunity, finding the back of the net to extend the lead, 2-0.
  • Four minutes later, Maurice would come sprinting down the left side, send a ball into the top of the 18-yard box, to find a streaking senior Connor Gervasi who buried it, extending the Lions' lead, 3-0.
  • In the 77th minute, Dominican broke the shutout with a goal off a header at the far post to come within two, 3-1.
  • After drawing a foul inside the box, the Lions earned a penalty shot in the 84th minute. Salgueiro stepped to the spot and drilled it into the back of the net for his second goal of the game and regain a thre-goal lead for the Lions, 4-1.
  • Dominican would net a penalty kick of its own with 24 seconds remaining and the cardinal and white would bring home a 4-2 victory.
