Garden City, N.Y. - The men's basketball team returned to the court for the opening contest of the 2024-2025 season, falling to Adelphi University 101-70 from the Center of Recreation and Sport.

How it Happened

• Trailing by six in the opening minutes, a fastbreak three-pointer from junior Payton Shumpert paired with a jumper from freshman Sebastian Bosquez brought the Lions within one, 8-7.
• Adelphi maintained its lead, lengthening it to as many as 26, 62-36, at the halftime break.
• The Panthers shot at nearly 46 percent from the field in the second half, extending the lead to as much as 38, 99-61.
• Sophomore Saba Beroshvili netted seven points in the final two and a half minutes of action to bring Molloy within 31.

Top Performances

• Sophomore Rob Matos led all scorers, just missing a career-high by netting 29 points on an 11-of-20 day from the floor that featured three three-pointers.
• Shumpert put up 13 points, going 50 percent from long distance, in his debut with the Lions, adding two assists and two rebounds.
• Sophomore Bryce Merchant netted seven points to go with three rebounds and two assists.
• Bosquez, freshman Joshua Malcolm, and graduate student Matt Lane each pulled down four rebounds. Bosquez also led with two blocks and added two helpers.
• Senior Mick Browne and redshirt junior Seydina Mohamed Dieng each had two steals.
