Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against New Haven

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - It was a one possession game throughout the final 18 seconds, but the men's basketball team was unable to overtake the Chargers of the University of New Haven this afternoon from Bob Houlihan Gymnasium. The Lions slip to 1-5 on the season with the loss while UNH improves to an even 3-3. 

How it Happened
  • The Chargers opened the contest on an 11-0 run after three minutes of play.
  • The visitors would maintain a double digit lead through most of the first half, but Molloy put together a 13-7 run that spanned four minutes to come within seven, 32-25, with four minutes left in the half.
  • Layups from freshmen Sebastian Bosquez and Joshua Malcolm closed out the final two minutes of scoring for the Lions, who trailed 38-29 at the break.
  • The Lions came out strong in the second half, opening up with a 12-2 run to take the team's first lead of the afternoon, 41-40. 
  • The teams would exchange three-pointers before UNH ultimately pulled in front, 60-56, with 9:29 left to play.
  • An eight-point run from sophomore Rob Matos knotted the contest at 64 with 5:32 on the clock.
  • New Haven saw back-to-back- scores from Tarese Morse to lead by four. Field goals from graduate student Matt Lane kept the Lions within one score of tying headed into the final two minutes. 
  • Three free throws from Morse put the visitors in front by five with 30 seconds to play before a layup from Matos set the score at 73-70. Matos accounted for all of Molloy's scoring in the final minute of play, adding a three-pointer and four foul shots to bring the Lions within one, 78-77, with six seconds left. 
  • Following a free throw from Tristian Jeffries, the Lions trailed by two with five seconds to play. Shumpert put up a three-pointer to seal the contest, but ultimately missed the rim to give UNH the victory.
Top Performances
  • Matos led all scorers with 26 points and topped the Lions with four assists. 
  • Shumpert netted 15 points and pulled down five rebounds. 
  • Both Lane and sophomore Bryce Merchant tallied 11 points, with Lane adding a team-leading 13 rebounds for a double-double. 
  • Senior Mick Browne led with three steals and added seven points.
  • Freshman Joshua Malcom also dished out four assists while scoring five points.

Molloy begins a three-game road series on Tuesday (Dec. 3) as they face East Stroudsburg University at 7:00 p.m. from the Koehler Fieldhouse.
