Second Half Struggles Sink Men's Basketball at East Stroudsburg

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - The men's basketball team was defeated by the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University this evening, 89-75. Molloy sits at 1-6 on the season while ESU improves to 6-2 with the victory.

How it Happened
  • Three-pointers from sophomore Rob Matos and freshman Dylan Kopp put Molloy ahead, 9-5, in the opening minutes of the contest.
  • Five unanswered points from ESU tied the contest at nine six minutes in.
  • The teams remained within one possession of one another for nearly the remainder of the first half. In the final two minutes, layups from graduate student Matt Lane and redshirt junior Seydina Mohammed Dieng paired with another trey from Matos put the Lions in front, 38-33. ESU hit a layup in the final 20 seconds to cut the lead to three points headed into the halftime break.
  • The home team opened the second half on a 15-0 run to take a 50-38 lead with just under 18 minutes left in the contest.
  • The Lions would come within six, 58-52, with 11 minutes on the clock, but the Warriors shot at nearly 63 percent from the field in the second half and maintained a double digit lead through the final buzzer.
Top Performances
  • Matos led Molloy with 23 points and a season-high seven assists, including sinking four three-pointers. 
  • Sophomore Bryce Merchant added 13 points and seven rebounds. 
  • Senior Mick Browne led with four steals while adding 11 points and two blocks.
  • Lane also tallied two blocks to go with 10 points and seven rebounds. 
  • Kopp had a career-high nine points while Dieng pulled down a career-high 11 boards.

Molloy will open East Coast Conference play on Saturday (Dec. 7) at Queens College at 3:00 p.m. from Flushing.
