Men's Soccer Collects Clean Sheet Against Daemen

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Molloy men's soccer team remained unblemished in East Coast Conference play this afternoon, defeating the Wildcats of Daemen University, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improve to 4-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play, while the Wildcats move to 3-4-2 overall and 0-3-1 in league play.

How it Happened
  • The contest was a possession game in the first half, with Molloy controlling the pace for most of the opening 45 minutes.
  • The Lions tallied the only two shots of the opening half, but neither would land on target sending the contest into halftime without a score.
  • The second half started quickly for the Lions generating two shots in the first three minutes. Senior Connor Gervasi had his shot go just wide of the far post and senior Diogo Ferreira saw his shot get denied by Daemen goalkeeper Arturo Bustamante.
  • In the 53rd minute following an illegal touch, Daemen earned a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box.
  • The free kick was taken by Rayane Baitiche, but freshman Callum Hunt got his glove on it to deflect the attempt off the cross bar, and the follow up attempt was comfortably saved by Hunt to deny the best chances of the afternoon for the Wildcats.
  • Two minutes later, Molloy converted on a corner kick. Freshman Charlie Morgan sent the kick into the box, it was flicked on by junior Max Hancock, and finished off by senior Sean Salgueiro to put Molloy in front, 1-0.
  • The cardinal and white continued its pressure in the 69th minute. Freshman Brennan Murphy created space for a shot, but his attempt was denied.
  • The road team looked for the equalizer with shots in the 72nd and 75th minutes, but both attempts missed target.
  • In the 83rd minute, the Lions looked to seal the contest. Salgueiro received a ball down the right flank and fired his shot, but it went high of the cross bar to keep the contest within one goal.
  • The last chance for Daemen came in the 88th minute. A crossing pass from the right side of the field found the head of Larry Noel, but the shot did not force a save.
  • The cardinal and white solidified its victory in the final seconds. Following a ball being misplayed by the back line of Daemen, Murphy came down with it and broke away to bury the goal and seal the victory, 2-0.
