Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Molloy men's soccer team inched one step closer to the East Coast Conference playoffs, picking up a 2-0 victory over the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island Wednesday evening at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improve to 5-5-4 overall and 3-0-3 in ECC play, while the Dolphins move to 3-10-1 overall and 1-5-1 in league competition.
How it Happened
- In the opening 1:24 sophomore Steph Maurice created space inside the 18-yard box with a shot, but his shot would be altered and be saved by Staten Island goalkeeper Justin Karaburan.
- Seven minutes later freshman Brennan Murphy looked to get the Lions on the board with a shot, but his attempt was blocked.
- Molloy continued its pressure in the 12th minute when senior Sean Salgueiro went for goal, but his shot was denied.
- The Lions broke through three minutes later off a failed clear following a throw in, Salgueiro corralled the ball and fired it into the back of the net to give Molloy a 1-0 lead.
- The Dolphins created its first two chances of the contest in the 20th and 22nd minute with a pair of shots from Peterson Larose that went wide.
- Peterson would generate chances three and four in the 25th and 27th minute, but one attempt was blocked and the second did not hit on target, keeping the Dolphins off the scoreboard.
- Neither team would generate a shot on goal for the remainder of the half, sending the game into halftime with Molloy ahead, 1-0.
- The cardinal and white wasted no time in the second half putting the pressure back on the Dolphins. Salguerio looked to double his goal tally with a shot 2:28 into the stanza, but his shot was saved.
- Two minutes later, senior Nick Leon gathered a clearing attempt and fired a shot from 30 yards out that snuck inside the bottom right post to put the Lions in firm control, 2-0.
- The Lions would hold the Dolphins without a shot until 34 seconds remaining in the contest. Staten Island forward Brian Kerilu looked to prevent a clean sheet, but freshman goalkeeper Callum Hunt denied the chance to secure the clean sheet victory, 2-0.

- Salgueiro netted his sixth goal of the season while pacing the squad with five shots with four coming on goal.
