Volleyball Slips Against Adelphi in Five Sets

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - It would take all five sets to decide a winner, but the volleyball team ultimately fell to the Panthers of Adelphi University, 3-2, in a tightly contested match. Molloy sits at 12-8 in the loss while Adelphi improves to 15-7 with the victory.

How it Happened
  • From the opening set, both team's set a precedent of how close this match would be, seeing the score tied 19 times, including as late as 26-26.
  • A kill and an ace from the Panthers gave the visitors the 1-0 match advantage.
  • The trend continued into the second set, which saw the game tied nine more times, despite lengthy rallies from both sides.
  • With the score knotted at 21, the cardinal and white fired off the next four points with kills from graduate student Kiarra Roth and junior Teresa Moulder to head into the third set with the contest tied, 1-1.
  • Molloy controlled the third set early, taking the first five points with two aces from senior Julia Zalta and two kills from freshman Isabella Rios.
  • Adelphi would come within one, 15-14, but a seven-point rally from Molloy that included three kills from Roth, an ace from Rios, and a kill from junior Roberta Monticelli propelled the Lions to a 22-14 advantage.
  • Roth and Moulder combined for two of the final three points necessary to give the home team a 2-1 lead on the match.
  • The Panthers dominated the start of the fourth set, using a 10-point rally on the serving of Gabrielle Stafford to lead, 12-2.

  • Roth led the Lions with 18 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double to go with two assists and an ace.
  • Moulder joined her in double digits with 11 kills while Rios (9) and Monticelli (8) followed.
  • Zalta topped 40 assists, totaling 43 while adding 11 digs and two aces.
  • Rios and junior Aria Miller each led the team with 13 digs with Miller also serving two aces and adding three assists.
  • Freshman Franki Kelleher led with five blocks.
