Rockville Centre, N.Y. – In an ECC classic, the Molloy men's soccer team came from behind to draw the 14
th ranked Mavericks of Mercy University, 2-2, at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions move to 3-4-1 overall and 1-0-1 in East Coast Conference play, while Mavericks move to 4-0-3 overall and 2-0-2 in league play.
How it Happened
- In the seventh minute, Mercy looked to crack the scoreboard with a shot but the attempt went wide of target.
- Senior Connor Gervasi came up firing following a running shot that was blasted, but the attempt was saved in the 12th minute.
- Three minutes later Mercy applied pressure, but a shot was saved by freshman Callum Hunt.
- Between the 22nd and 28th minutes, Mercy generated three shots, but none reached target as two were blocked and one went wide.
- Senior Sean Salgueiro lined up a shot from long distance in the 29th minute, but his attempt would curl just high of the cross bar, leaving the game without a score.
- One minute later the cardinal and white broke through. Junior Matt Star was able to settle a ball in the box and beat the keeper to the short side to get Molloy on the board, 1-0.
- In the final five minutes of the opening half, Mercy generated two excellent scoring chances, but Hunt remained steady and made a pair of saves to send the contest to halftime with Molloy in front, 1-0.
- The Mavericks came out of halftime with consistent pressure, tallying three shots in the first 20 minutes. Hunt made a save and the other two chances were blocked, keeping Molloy ahead.
- In the 66th minute, Mercy knotted the contest at one following a goal off a free kick.
- Star looked for his second goal of the contest and reclaim the lead for the Lions in the 71st minute, but his shot was blocked by the back line of Mercy.
- The road team took the lead in the 82nd minute. After a shot was saved by Hunt, the Mavericks settled down the rebound and found the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead.
- Molloy upped its pressure looking for the tying goal in the next three minutes. Following a pair of crosses into the box, Star and senior Nick Leon made two attempts, but both were saved by Mercy goalkeeper Eirik Elvestad.
- With 2:37 remaining on the clock, a crossing pass into the box went through the hands of Elvestad and junior Michael Hofmann was waiting for the rebound and put it into the back of the net to bring the contest back to all square, 2-2.
- The Mavericks would generate two chances in the final 13 seconds. Following a free kick, the first shot from the road team was saved by Hunt and hit off the cross bar. The follow up header attempt was denied by Hunt yet again.
- The clock would strike zero and the contest would end in a 2-2 draw.

- Star netted the first goal of his collegiate career and paced the team with three shots.
- Sophomore Steph Maurice dished out an assist, bringing his total to six on the season.
- In goal, Hunt made a season-high eight saves.
