Men’s Soccer Comes From Behind to Draw with STAC

Sparkill, N.Y. – A pair of goals in the second half paced the Molloy men's soccer team to a come from behind draw, 2-2, with the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field. The Lions move to 4-5-4 overall and remain without a loss in East Coast Conference play (3-0-2), while the Spartans move to 6-4-2 overall and 1-1-2 in league play.
 
How it Happened
  • The first chance of the game came from the Lions with a shot from senior Sean Salgueiro that was saved by the Spartans goalkeeper Johan Morales in the eighth minute.
  • The Spartans had its first chance four minutes later, with a header shot that was denied by freshman goalkeeper Callum Hunt.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas nearly notched the match's first goal in the 21st minute with a shot from Kevon Evans that hit the post.
  • In the 28th minute, the home team would crack the scoreboard with a goal from Evans to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
  • The Spartans needed just three minutes before it extended the lead to 2-0, with a goal from Jiya Maziko.
  • In the 39th minute, the Lions looked to cut the deficit to one, but freshman Charlie Morgan had his shot saved.
  • Neither team would have a chance for the remainder of the half, sending the game into halftime with the Spartans in front, 2-0.
  • 15 minutes into the second half senior Nick Leon created a chance, but his attempt was once again saved.
  • In the 64th minute, Leon would not be denied a second time, netting the first goal of the game for the Lions off a feed from Morgan to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
  • With 20 minutes to play, sophomore Wilmer Flores generated a chance with a header, but it was wide of target.
  • With under 12 minutes to go, the Spartans looked for an insurance goal to put the game out of reach, but Hunt made a save to keep the Lions within one.
  • In the 87th minute the cardinal and white earned a corner kick. Morgan sent in the curler and found the head of sophomore Mathew Broadhead who found the back of the net to bring the contest all square at two.
  • Neither team would create a chance in the final three minutes, ending the game in a 2-2 tie.
Top Performances
  • Leon and Broadhead netted their second goals of the season.
  • Morgan dished out two assists.
  • In goal, Hunt made three saves.

The Lions return to John A. Darcy Field Wednesday, October 23 to take on the College of Staten Island in its final home game of the regular season. Kick-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
