Volleyball Stumbles Against Mercy

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team dropped a closely contested East Coast Conference game tonight against Mercy University from Quealy Gymnasium, 3-1. Molloy fell to 4-9 on the season and 1-2 in conference play while Mercy improved to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in league play.

How it Happened
  • The Mavericks would score the first two points of the contest on a kill and an ace and would lead from open to close. Molloy would come within one on three occasions.
  • The Lions responded by taking the first five points of the second set, including two kills from senior Kiarra Roth and would also lead through the conclusion of the set. In a 7-1 run to make it 20-10, senior Chye Davis accounted for a kill and three blocks. 
  • A 7-2 run that included three kills from sophomore Aria Miller gave the Lions a 15-9 lead, but Mercy responded with a five-point run to come within one. Molloy maintained its advantage, leading as late as 22-1, before the visitors recorded the final four points of the match to go ahead, 2-1, on the match.
  • Molloy would start the fourth set once again with a four-point lead. The advantage would remain with the Lions until a six-point run for the Mavs gave them a 17-13 lead.
  • The home team would tie the score at 19, but were unable to overcome the deficit. 
Top Performances
  • Roth led with 18 kills while adding four blocks and four digs.
  • Miller set a career-high eight kills while leading the team with 15 digs.
  • The top scorers were rounded out by seven from junior Roberta Monticelli, who added three digs and two blocks. 
  • Davis' six blocks paced the squad while sophomore Sara Hiebert added three.
  • Graduate student Mariana Donado Yepes tallied 36 assists, eight digs, and two blocks.
  • Freshman Hope Carolan and junior Angelina Scichilone each had eight digs.
