Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team fell to the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions move to 1-6-2 and 0-2-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Redhawks improve to 3-3-3 overall and 2-0-1 in league play.
How it Happened
- After a feeling out period in the first seven minute, the Lions won a corner kick in the ninth. Senior Jonas Jacobsen sent the attempt to the back post and found the head of freshman Harvey Chahal, but his header was sent wide of the left post.
- The cardinal and whites defense was stout in the opening 25 minutes, allowing just one shot that was blocked by the backline.
- The only save that graduate student Dennis Mejia had to make came in the 26th minute, but the shot did not force Mejia to move much off his line.
- The Lions generated another header opportunity in the 34th minute following a cross from freshman Matt Star, junior Connor Gervasi looked to net the goal into the far post, but his attempt just slid by the post keeping the game scoreless.
- Molloy had one final chance of the first half in the 44th minute, but senior Andy Blanco put his shot over the bar to send the game into halftime scoreless.
- Blanco continued his momentum in the second stanza, with a shot 30 seconds into the half, but his attempt was saved by Roberts Wesleyan goalkeeper Caleb DaSilva.
- The 55th minute saw the road team have a chance to break the scoreless tie, but again, Mejia made a save to keep the game knotted at zero.
- The Redhawks continued to generate chances this time in the 63rd minute, but Mejia in good position denied another chance to keep the game gridlocked.
- 10 minutes later, the home team had its best chance to crack the scoreboard. Jacobsen set up for a free kick to the left of the 18-yard box, sent the ball in and found the head of graduate student Nicolay Kutzop who had his attempted saved, but Chahal came in for the rebound and put his shot wide of the net.
- In the 84th minute, following a throughball that deflected off a member of the Lions back line, Redhawks forward Tamas Nagy broke into the box and put it past Mejia to give the Redhawks the game-winner, 1-0.
