Washington, D.C. – The Molloy men's soccer team and the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds played to a 1-1 draw Sunday evening at Maryland Soccerplex. The Lions moved to 1-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in East Coast Conference play, while UDC moved to 2-3-3 and 0-0-2 in league play.
How it Happened
- The home team opened the contest with a pair of chances in the first five minutes, with one shot being blocked and another going high.
- Junior Nick Leon generated a scoring opportunity in the ninth minute, but his attempt was saved by UDC goalkeeper Sergio Becerra.
- In the 15th minute, the home team threated with its best opportunity of the half. A shot from UDC forward Ignacio Pericet was saved by the Lions backline and the follow-up attempt was put high to keep the game scoreless.
- The 26th minute saw senior Edwin Castellon create space for a shot, but the shot was sent wide of target.
- Neither team was able to generate any offense for the remainder of the half sending the game into halftime without a score.
- Nine minutes into the second half, freshman Matthew Broadhead buried a goal off a feed from freshman Sachin Cox to break the scoreboard, 1-0.
- The home team made the most of its first opportunity of the stanza, netting a goal to knot the contest at one in the 63rd minute.
- UDC continued its momentum looking to break the tie in the 68th minute, but graduate student Dennis Mejia denied a chance from Santiago Martinez to keep the game tied at one.
- In the 75th minute, Leon had a chance to push the cardinal and white in front, but his chance was denied.
- The Firebirds generated its final opportunity of the contest when forward Axel Gamez fired a shot, but Mejia was stout in net and made the save in the 84th minute.
- Molloy had one final chance in the 89th minute when freshman Harvey Chahal saw his shot go high as the contest would conclude in a 1-1 draw.
