ECC Baseball Championship Preview: #1 Molloy vs. #4 Mercy

Uniondale, N.Y. – For the second consecutive year the Molloy baseball team earned the top seed in the ECC Championship. The Lions will host the fourth-seeded Mercy College Mavericks in the first round at Mitchel Field. 
 
About Molloy:
  • The Lions finished the regular season 33-15 overall and 19-5 in conference play, the 33 wins are the most in a regular-season in program history. 
  • The cardinal and white won its second consecutive East Coast Conference Championship last season.
  • East Coast Conference Player of the Year junior Garrett Scavelli paces the offense leading the ECC in hits (69), second in average (.383) and doubles (18), third in RBIs (41), and tied for third with 13 stolen bases. The center fielder carries a 12-game hitting streak into postseason play. 
  • All-Conference First Team selection sophomore JJ DeVito has been a catalyst atop the Lions lineup this season. The sophomore ranks sixth in the conference hitting .375 tallying 57 hits with 19 going for extra bases and 12 stolen bases. 
  • Junior Aidan Larkin who was named to the All-ECC First team has been a key piece to the squad in the batter's box and in the field. The shortstop is second on the team with 59 hits while hitting .326 and collecting 12 doubles. Larkin enters the tournament with his third lengthy hitting streak of the season, currently nine games.
  • After missing last season due to injury, graduate student Jake McCarthy has made an impact in the middle of the order. The first basemen is fifth in the ECC with 39 RBI collecting 53 hits while hitting .308.
  • Junior Gavin McAlonie is third on the squad driving 35 runs on the campaign with a pair of home runs.
  • Scavelli, graduate student Chris Peralta, and Second Team All-ECC junior Matt Yip enter the tournament with five home runs each. 
  • On the mound, All-ECC First Team honoree graduate student Brian Morrisey leads the conference with a 2.89 ERA. The right-hander has tossed two complete games on the season holding a 6-3 record. 
  • Senior Charlie Cucchiara who was named to the All-ECC First Team for the third consecutive season is second in the league with seven wins and fifth in strikeouts (61). The senior holds a 7-3 record and has pitched two complete games including a three-hit complete game shutout against Lincoln (Apr. 28).
  • After setting the single-season wins record a season ago, graduate student Mike Andreoli has not lost a game he has started in. The southpaw leads the conference with eight wins including picking up his most recent victory against 11th ranked Southern New Hampshire.
  • Out of the bullpen, All-ECC First Team selection senior Richard Genarro is third in the ECC with four saves while posting a 2.49 ERA.
Postseason History:
  • The top-seeded Lions defeated the second-seeded Knights of Queens College to win its second consecutive ECC Championship last season.
  • After falling in the opening game of the tournament, Molloy rallied off four straight wins capped by a 12-10 victory in the final.
  • The cardinal and white earned the two-seed and a host site in the NCAA East Regional. The Lions advanced to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time in program history. 
#4 Mercy:
  • The Mavericks finished the season with a 15-31 overall record and 10-14 in ECC play.
  • All-ECC Second Team honoree Jaden Caballero sets the table for the squad leading the conference with 22 stolen bases. The sophomore tops the team in hitting .330 and hits (61).
  • The pitching rotation has a pair of arms that have tossed 60+ innings in Scott Scheppy (68) and Kevin Seckler (62).
  • The Lions swept the Mavericks earlier this season March 24 – March 27.
The Field:
 
#2 STAC:
  • The Spartans enter the tournament 23-25 overall and 16-8 in conference play.
  • Gregory DiGiaro is the power in the heart of the lineup for the Spartans leading the conference with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs while hitting .297 on the campaign. 
  • The rotation is led by ECC Pitcher of the Year Aaron Dona who holds a 6-3 record leads the conference with 104 strikeouts and is fifth in ERA (3.57).
  • Molloy and STAC split its four-game series this season with both teams winning a pair of games on their home field April 14 – April 16.
#3 Queens:
  • The Knights begin postseason play with a 29-16 overall record and 13-9 in league play.
  • Queens lineup holds three starters hitting over .350, led by ECC Rookie of the Year and First Team selection freshman Josixt Jimenez who is third in the conference with a .382 batting average, second in RBIs (49), and tied for fifth in home runs (6).
  • The Knights have a pair of five-game winners on the mound in Dean Fazah and Jordan Sanabria who paces the team with 59 strikeouts. Out of the bullpen, All-ECC Second Team selection Danny Gargano leads the conference with nine saves holding a 2.36 ERA allowing seven earned runs in 26.2 innings pitched.
  • Molloy took three-of-four games against Queens this season from April 6 – April 10.
