Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Handles Queens, 3-1

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team returned to action from Quealy Gymnasium this evening with a 3-1 victory over the Knights of Queens College. Molloy attacked at a .307 clip, led by a .545 percentage that saw just one error in the second set, one of the Lions' most efficient matches to date. Nearing the halfway point of conference play, Molloy now sits at 9-6 on the season and 3-2 in East Coast Conference competition. Queens fell to 6-9 (3-2 ECC) in the loss.

How it Happened
  • Molloy opened the contest on a 7-1 run that featured kills from seniors Kiarra Roth and Chye Davis and back-to-back aces from sophomore Aria Miller.
  • Queens would rally to come within one, 11-10, before a nine point swing decided the contest in favor of the home team. The run featured blocks from Miller, Davis, and Roth as well as kills from Miller and Roth and an ace from graduate student Mariana Donado Yepes. 
  • After three tied scores started the second set, three kills from Miller in a string of four points for Molloy gave the home team a 9-4 advantage.
  • The Lions maintained the advantage and led by as much as 22-10 before the final three points came by way of a kill from junior Roberta Monticelli and a service ace from sophomore Angelina Scichilone.
  • Exchanging points to open the third set, Queens would gain the first two advantage of the match by scoring back-to-back points on attack errors from the Lions.
  • Trailing by seven, the cardinal and white fought back to within three on kills from Roth, Miller, and Davis, but the set would ultimately end in favor of the visitors.
  • Kills from Roth, Monticelli,  sophomore Sara Hiebert, and Donado Yepes paired with an ace from freshman Hope Carolan propelled Molloy to a 9-3 start in the final set.
  • Two kills from Roth paired with a kill and block from Monticelli increased the lead to 16-7.
  • The Knights would come within six, 23-17, but the contest would be decided with an ace from Donado Yepes.
Top Performances
  • Roth led the game in both kills (18) and digs (15) while putting up three blocks.
  • Scichilone also tallied 15 digs and paced the contest with three service aces.
  • Miller tallied 12 kills to go with two aces and six digs. 
  • Monticelli had nine kills while Davis added seven and led the team with five blocks.
  • Donado Yepes recorded 41 assists to go with five digs and two aces. 
  • Hiebert put up three blocks to go with three kills.
  • Carolan added seven assists and seven digs. 
  • Sophomore Keri Carlin rounded out Molloy's stat line with a service ace and a dig.

Molloy will step out of league play on Thursday (Oct. 5) as it hosts Bloomfield College at 7:00 p.m. from Rockville Centre.
